KENNEWICK--Mentoring middle schoolers has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. I struggled growing up with anxiety and missed a lot of school because of it. I remember how hard that can be to feel behind or left out when you've missed days at school. I know I would have benefited from having a program like Attendance Matters.
Every student in our program is unique and has their own needs. Most of the students enrolled come every day, whether we are doing an activity or not. They have formed friendships and bonds by coming there. We create a safe spot for them. A few of the students who come just need a comfortable place to come for lunch, which we are happy to provide.
I remember days when I ate my lunch in the bathroom stall because I didn't want to be around anyone and needed a safe place. Our room is that safe place for some students. We had a student join us recently who was really struggling at school. She came to school every day. However, her home life is extremely difficult. She struggled with her grades and she wasn't social. She kept to herself and had behavior issues. She came to our group every day. Now she talks with the other students. She seems to be opening up more.
Being able to help a student who was struggling so much was a great feeling and is a reminder of why I wanted to do this, and why I continue to. I know that being there provides support to these kiddos. The kind of support I desperately needed when I was young. This has got me thinking about finishing my college courses so I can continue my dream to be a children's counselor. Being an AmeriCorps member has introduced me to our community programs. I am proud to be serving and volunteering in my community.
