Volunteer: Disasters harm families. Can you help?Every day, the American Red Cross sees the heartbreak of people trying to cope with more intense storms, heavier rainfall, higher temperatures, stronger hurricanes and more devastating wildfires. As more people rely on the Red Cross for help, the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater. Volunteers help comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to fires, storms and other emergencies, so they don’t have to face tough times alone. Join us and turn your compassion into action by becoming a volunteer today. We are actively recruiting for these critical volunteer roles: Shelter Support Team: During large disasters, you can support the day-to-day activities within a shelter which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Free online training will be provided. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice. Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. We supply all the training you need. Volunteer: Marra Farm Giving Garden Work Party (Group)Do you want to end hunger in your community?
Imagine a city where people have equal access to healthy and culturally appropriate food. The Community Food Education (CFE) at Solid Ground fosters community connections through gardening education, sustainable food production, environmental stewardship, and raising awareness about good nutrition and food justice. We also fight hunger by providing low-income individuals with seeds and materials, and supporting backyard gardeners in donating fruits and vegetables grown in King County. If you share our vision, join us at Marra Farm Giving Garden in Seattle's South Park neighborhood! A Giving Garden Work Party offers an idyllic outdoor opportunity to bond with your coworkers. Dig into soil, plant, weed, and harvest much-needed fresh food for our neighbors as you connect with your team. With the rising cost of food, our local communities rely on fresh produce from Marra Farm more than ever. Help us grow healthy and culturally appropriate food for our neighbors in need! Time Commitment Help us kick off the growing season in March and April, or support us during the highest need months of July through September. We’ve already set aside most Tuesdays from 9am to 2pm during the growing season for large-group work parties, preferably with 20 or more volunteers. We encourage you to sign up for a full shift, but we ask for a minimum of three hours. Teams can consist of coworkers, community or church group members, or neighbors. All are welcome! To Apply Please click the Respond button below. We will get back to you within 3-5 business days with next steps. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), and people with the lived experience of food insecurity are strongly encouraged to volunteer. Volunteer: Meals on Wheels Drivers NeededCome join our Amazing Meals on Wheels Volunteer Team! Are you a kind and compassionate person who wants to make a difference and have a positive impact for senior members in our community? If the answer is yes, then this is the opportunity for you! We have a team of amazing volunteers who bring meals to homebound seniors in our community Monday thru Friday, delivering over 4000 meals each week. Our Meals on Wheels clients struggle to cook for themselves for a variety of reasons: some lost a loved one who did the cooking, some suffer from physical limitations, some face cognitive decline, others struggle to leave the house to get groceries for cooking. Whatever the reason, we are there to make sure they have healthy meals. We are looking for Sub Drivers to fill in when Regular Drivers are on vacation, have an appointment, or are out sick, with the opportunity for a recurring once-a -week route delivery when one arises, if desired. It does require having your own vehicle for transporting meals, with mileage reimbursement available. If you are interested in becoming a driver, we would love to have you join us at our next Meals on Wheels Orientation, which is mandatory before being able to deliver meals. (Date TBD) Most routes leave our center between 7:45am and 11:00 am Monday-Friday. (No weekend routes) To become a volunteer driver: 1. We ask volunteers to participate in an orientation (approx. 1.5 hours) to learn about being a driver and how to handle various situations. 2. We ask volunteers to fill out a Volunteer Application so that we can run a background check (required by DSHS). Feel free to come by the Bellingham Senior Activity Center and pick up an application, or apply online at: www.whatcomcoa.org (Click on "VOLUNTEER" in the upper right corner of the homepage, and then scroll about halfway down the page to access the beginning of the application) 3) We will verify Driver's License and Auto Insurance and make a copy of both at the Meals on Wheels Orientation. 4) Before delivering a route, we ask drivers to go on a ride-along with one of our experienced drivers so it is a smooth transition for our participants and our drivers. We would be happy to answer any questions you have and would love for you to join this amazing team of volunteers who are making a huge difference in our community. This is a GREAT opportunity for a teen to ride-along with a parent to deliver meals while the parent drives. Questions?
