Volunteer: Fishing Guide Volunteer

Are you looking to have some fun while making a difference in your community?

Plymouth Housing Group is a local non-profit organization that provides permanent supportive housing at 17 residential buildings that serve about 1,400 residents who were formerly homelessness. We are looking for a few volunteers who are knowledgeable, passionate, and interested in outdoor recreation, specifically fishing. Our building staff want to take a group of residents on a day trip to leisurely fish and enjoy time outdoors together. We are looking for a small group of volunteers to lead the trip by choosing the location, providing some gear (a few residents have limited gear), helping residents and staff learn how to fish, and assisting with transportation. We can provide some transportation as well. This would be very relaxed as some of our residents have mobility and health limitations. Ideally the fishing location would be 20-30 minutes from downtown Seattle and not involve any hiking.

Volunteers must understand and align with Plymouth's mission and values of harm reduction and housing first. Many logistics will be figured out closer to the summertime. If you and a group are interested click "Respond" to sign up or get in contact. If you have any questions, please reach out to volunteer@plymouthhousing.org. Let's get this partnership rolling!

Thank you for your interest in supporting our residents!

Volunteer: Drive a DAV vehicle

Our nation’s heroes travel around the globe to protect our freedoms—it’s only right that we return their dedication. Volunteering to drive a Veteran ensures that even those living remotely from VA hospitals can make their appointments and not go without the treatment they need.

Join the team! Whatcom County volunteer drivers will operate a DAV van (no personal vehicles). Staged in Bellingham, departing early in the morning, the route of travel includes planned stops along the way in Bellingham, Mount Vernon, Stanwood, Arlington, and Marysville. After the Veterans are delivered to the Seattle VA Medical Center, the driver is free to go about their business in town or to remain at the facility until the Veteran calls the driver's government-supplied cell phone to advise they are ready to return home. Volunteer drivers are provided a meal ticket for use at the Veterans Canteen Service.

Volunteer drivers operate VA vehicles furnished by the DAV. Volunteers must be 21 or over, pass a physical, be insurable and have a valid driver's license. The approval process includes a federal background check which might take as long as 90 days, so apply now even for a future interest. Training will be provided.

Volunteer: Hair Stylist/Barber Volunteer

Are you looking to make a difference in your community and positively impact people's lives?

Role Summary: We are looking for several volunteers who know how to cut/trim hair of varying textures and lengths. The haircuts/trims would be very simple and basic. This volunteer would be placed in one of our 17 buildings across the Seattle area to host hour-long drop-in hair cutting sessions bi-weekly or once a month. This role is highly impactful for our residents who often struggle to maintain hygiene, cannot afford to go to the barber/stylist, or feel uncomfortable in public barbershops/salons. Having a volunteer meet them where they are at eliminates these barriers and encourages self-care behaviors.

Role Qualifications/Requirements:

If you do not have licenses/certificates, please instead provide a detailed history of your experience and images of your work. Barber school/beauty school students are highly encouraged to volunteer! We would be happy to count the volunteering towards any hours you may need to get certified.   A desire to engage with our residents and to align with or learn more about our values of housing first and harm reduction.   Need to provide your own hair cutting scissors, clippers, other supplies etc.   Pass a background check.  Be committed for at least 6 months on a bi-weekly or monthly cadence.   Have reliable transportation to and from the building.

Volunteer: Tree Wrangler (Work Party Stage Crew)

Join our awesome team of Tree Wranglers!

Tree Wranglers are like the stage crew at a play or concert, for our tree-planting work parties. They do all the planning, site exploration, transport, and manual labor that's needed to make sure each seedling will be planted in the right place, and all tools and materials are ready to go and arranged onsite. They also provide instruction and guidance to tree-planting volunteers during work parties. Their crucial prep work and expertise ensures smooth and productive tree-planting projects!

Work times are arranged in collaboration with our Planting Coordinator and other Tree Wranglers. As part of a small and flexible team, your individual commitment can vary according to your own preferences and schedule limitations. You'll typically be needed on weekdays leading up to a weekend work party, and sometimes right before and during a work party. Our planting season is November-late March.

We provide all necessary tools, gloves, and training, and if needed you may be able to arrange carpooling with other Wranglers (many sites are outside city limits/not accessible by public transportation or bike). Comfort with manual labor, heavy lifting, and all-weather outdoor work is a must; passion for trees and planting strategies preferred. This is a great opportunity to learn a lot and be part of a passionate and dedicated team, while doing satisfying work essential to the planting part of our mission! Let us know if you're interested in being a Tree Wrangler!

Volunteer: Mentor Girls in Pierce County with Girl Scouts!

Just by being yourself, you can be a person that Girl Scouts can count on—the one who listens intently, who encourages them to chase their goals, who keeps them laughing, and who helps them feel confident in who they are. Together, you’ll build a community where every Girl Scout is celebrated and valued.

You don't have to have a child of your own to get involved; all you need is a passion for mentoring the next generation of leaders.

Currently, girls in Pierce County are being placed on waitlists to participate in our leadership development program, because we do not have enough adult volunteers. Troop leaders and assistant leaders are needed to start new troops for girls ages 5-18 years in your neighborhood.

Any adult age 18+ may volunteer (must be 21+ to become a troop leader).

No Girl Scout experience required! We provide the training, curriculum, and resources—you set the schedule! It's that easy.

Each troop needs at least two unrelated, background-checked adults (one of whom must identify as female).

We provide activity plans for you to freely use. You don't have to spend hours preparing for a meeting—it's all there for you and can be customized to meet your needs.

The frequency and day/time of your troop activities are up to YOU and your Troop! Meetings, locations, activities, and programming are flexible to meet the needs of your Girl Scouts.

Volunteer: Peninsula High School AVID Mentor

AVID—Advancement Via Individual Determination—fosters a safe and open culture, high expectations for teachers and students, and collaboration in all classrooms.  Tutoring in AVID is different from any volunteer position you have held before.  Many AVID students are first in their family to attend college and want to achieve big dreams!  AVID students need role models and mentors to support their dream of college.  AVID tutors assist students to achieve their full potential by facilitating collaborative tutorial groups that use critical thinking skills, practicing public speaking, utilizing multiple resources (print and electronic), asking high level questions, taking Cornell notes, analyzing the process of each question, and writing reflections about their learning.  Small group tutorial sessions are held twice a week (Tuesday & Thursday), volunteers choose which time during the days they would like.  No experience necessary, just the love of learning and your kindness.

Bring your gift of time and friendship to empower students on the path to a brighter future!

For additional information, contact

Myka Cranford

Programs begin the end of October and finish the end of May or beginning of June.

Volunteer: Recruiting Board Members

Projects for a Civil Society is recruiting board members!

Our work touches everything that matters! We are experts at creating empathy, compassion and community. Our work is also powerful for trauma recovery.  We run intense 3 day experiential workshops. We have helped former white supremacists and gang members leave these hate groups. We help prison inmates reduce the violence and stress in their lives. We help veterans reduce the impacts of their PTSD. We help build empathic communities in schools. We are working on court diversion programs for youth and adults. We work internationally through the State Department having worked with delegations from over 30 countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Colombia, Israel, Palestine, Mexico, Myanmar and more.

The curriculum we use is being used by a network of organizations in over 50 countries dealing with such issues as trauma recovery in Rwanda, removing child soldiers from paramilitaries and guerillas in Colombia, rape camps in the Congo, trafficked girls in Nepal, refugee camps, drug recovery efforts. It is in prisons and schools around the world. Help us find more places we are needed locally!

Our group has tripled our work in the last few years and is looking now at doubling that again. We need to increase our organizational professionalism, funding and name recognition  - and seek board members who can help us with these tasks.

If interested, please press the "respond" button and we will be in touch with information about the next steps

Volunteer: Neighborcare Health Governing Board of Directors

Neighborcare Health is looking for passionate patients, parents/guardians of patients, and community members to serve on our governing Board of Directors.

Volunteer to:

Share your experience and skills to make a difference.  Make a positive impact on health care in your community. Support health equity. Gain valuable leadership experience. Learn how community health helps your community thrive. Help others get the care they need. Responsibilities and Qualifications

Neighborcare Health's governing Board of Directors volunteer their time to set and oversee the policies, strategies, and performance of the organization. As a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), the majority of Neighborcare Health’s governing board members must be patients who use our services. This is incredibly important, as board members set the course for our future, and patient board members ensure that the patient perspective is front and center.

Patient board members must be current Neighborcare Health patients or parents/guardians of a patient. Non-patient community board members are also welcome.  Board members attend a two-hour meeting each month.   Neighborcare Health can help cover the cost of transportation and/or childcare during meetings.

About Neighborcare Health

At Neighborcare Health, we believe everyone deserves a place to call their health care home, where a team of medical, dental and mental health professionals work in collaboration with each patient to develop a personal health improvement plan.

We are one of the largest providers of primary medical, dental and behavioral health care services in the Seattle area serving low-income and uninsured families and individuals, seniors on fixed incomes, immigrants, and people experiencing homelessness. Each year we care for nearly 60,000 patients at our nearly 30 non-profit medical, dental and school-based clinics. We ask everyone to pay what they can, but no one is turned away due to inability to pay.

Our clinics are located in neighborhoods where health disparities are the greatest, and our care teams, who speak over 55 languages and dialects, are as diverse as our patients.

No matter who you are, or where you come from, regardless of your insurance, income or immigration status, you are welcome at Neighborcare Health.

Volunteer: Looking for Founding, Foundation Board Members

Neighborcare Health is one of Seattle’s largest community health system, or Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). Our focus is to provide care for low-income and uninsured individuals and families. For 55 years, Neighborcare Health has served people in Seattle and King County’s who face barriers to health care, ensuring a healthy and safe city for all.

Today Neighborcare Health serves 60,000 people per year, who access care through almost 30 medical, dental, and school based sites as well as programs in homeless shelters, on the streets, and in supportive housing.

Neighborcare Health has been steadily increasing its philanthropic presence, and continued fundraising success is necessary to grow services for the quarter million low-income people not yet served by a health center in King County.

Additionally, potential changes in federal policy may threaten Neighborcare Health’s ability to maintain current levels of service. In this worst-case scenario, we are confident the community will stand up to support our work and our neighbors. But we know we must increase our fundraising capacity to match the need.

While most non-profit boards are recruited for fundraising capacity, Neighborcare Health’s board is required to have 51% or greater consumer representation. While this provides authentic patient experience, it also results in a board not optimally suited to fundraise.

To strengthen our relationship to the philanthropic and business communities, Neighborcare Health is considering creating a 509 support organization, the Neighborcare Health Foundation.

THE NEIGHBORCARE HEALTH FOUNDATION

Purpose: Work closely with Neighborcare board, leaders, and staff, to ensure Neighborcare Health has adequate financial resources to fulfill its mission.

Agency: Neighborcare Health

Volunteer: Continuing Education Instructor in need of Assistant

Education Is a Key to Success, Continuing Education Instructor In Need Of Assistants

DESC has assisted hundreds of individuals obtain employment as their primary path out of homelessness and toward greater stability through two distinct programs: Supported Employment Program and continuing education classes. This program has been a great success, so much so it's more than one person can handle alone.

Below is a description of the continuing education program offered to DESC clients and the commitment needed from a volunteer assistant.

1. The class is for a wide range of abilities. Most students enter at very basic levels. This is not an ESL class but some non-native speakers, with no better options available, have spent time in the class and have coped well.

2. Clients join for a wide range of reasons including using time productively, self-improvement, gaining employment skills, gaining a GED or preparing for college interest admission tests.

3. Students do not need to commit to an attendance level.

4. Classes are free.

5. Monday and Tuesday from 8:30am-10:30am at the DESC's Gateway in Honor of Tenaya Wright.

We are still requiring masks in all client areas so masking is required for this particular volunteer opportunity. Must be vaccinated for Covid-19 or have a compelling reason not to be.

Volunteer: Kitsap Harvest Driver/Driver team

Currently we need a driver and driver assistant to take over every other Thursday afternoon's route, delivering boxes of food starting on Thursday, November 16th, from 1pm to 3pm.

Generally, we are looking for volunteers to help with produce pick-up from several of our existing routes. The ideal volunteer commitment is every other week on a set schedule for one of our pickup routes. Our collection routes include Farmers Markets, Neighborhood Donation Stations, Partner Organizations providing both fresh and recovered produce. Using the preferred method of transport, the produce is collected and then delivered to the Kitsap Harvests aggregation/distribution hub.

Donation Stations - We have Neighborhood Donation Stations through Kitsap. We've organized these into two routes, one route from Kingston to Bremerton, and the other route from Port Orchard to Bremerton, both routes ending at the Kitsap Harvest Aggregation and Distribution Hub in Bremerton. Both of these routes are collected from either Sunday evening or Monday morning, weekly. Drivers will be using their own vehicle and coordinating with Neighborhood Captains to confirm produce pickup. (Seasonal)

Farmers Market Drivers - Collecting from either the Port Orchard Farmers Market on Saturday (1:45pm -2:15) or Bremerton Community Farmers market on Thursday (6:45pm -7:15)The food is collected from the Market vendors, documented, and then transported, using your own vehicle to our Bremerton Aggregation and Distribution Hub. (Seasonal)

Partner Org produce pickup and recovery- This regular route done on Tuesday and Thursday (with a priority in filling Thursday shift first) is picking up produce from 3 locations, using the Isuzu NPR 16 ft box truck (no special license needed) Drivers would pick-up food and bring it back to the warehouse for weighing and sorting by volunteers.

Truck Lead- We need a point person who can look after the care of our truck. It is important keeping-up on truck maintenance log and communicating any issues ASAP. We have several volunteer drivers who use this truck, but since they are envolved in other operations of Kitsap Harvest, we can not ask them to take on one more responsibility... it would be nice to have someone as the dedicated point person to check the basics for operation on a weekly/monthly basis... maybe give the truck a wash and or check the mileage and report if the truck needs maintnance.

If you have any questions  let us know at info@kitsapharvest.org.

Volunteer: Food Drive Hosts for the YWCA

The YWCA Central Food Bank currently serves 300+ food-insecure households in Central & South Seattle. Every Wednesday, 80+ volunteers pack and distribute over 6,000 lbs. of food. Food requests have increased and we have a waitlist of families who need help. Much of our food comes from institutional and government donors like Food Lifeline, NW Harvest and the USDA. We also rely heavily on our community for assistance – for both food and volunteers.

Volunteers who would like to host a food drive will connect with their communities for donations, collect and deliver the donations to the food bank. This is a great opportunity for school, work, church, and other groups.

Most needed:
• $25 and $50 gift cards to Safeway, QFC/Kroger, or Grocery Outlet. Gift cards empower families to purchase culturally appropriate food and items they need
• Canned soups, stews, and chili – vegetarian and meaty, pop-tops/pull tabs are best
• White rice (uncooked)
• Tuna and canned chicken
• Baby formula and baby food
• Diapers (size 5 and 6) and baby wipes
• Cash donations – used to buy protein, eggs, dairy, staples and high demand food items. Please contact us to make a cash/check donation.

Always useful:
• Top ramen – meat and vegetarian
• Pasta and pasta sauce
• Crackers – saltine/Ritz wrapped ‘packs’
• Peanut butter
• Jam, jelly, syrup, and honey
• Ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise
• Cooking oil

Volunteer: Be a Home Delivery Food Box Packing specialist!

Help ensure food security for your neighbors by volunteering with North Helpline's food bank in Lake City!

Some neighbors do not have the ability or connections necessary to shop for themselves at our weekly food distributions. To counter these barriers, North Helpline provides home delivery to homebound individuals every other week on Tuesday and Thursday.

We pack on Tuesday and Thursdays from 9:30am-1:30pm with dietary needs and restrictions in mind. Because of this and the particular needs of some neighbors, attention to detail is a key attribute needed to help pack these boxes. Dietary knowledge for needs such as diabetes, gluten intolerance, and food allergies, as well as the ability to lift up to 30 pounds is also a plus.

Interested in working with us? Click the "Respond" button and we will follow up with you. We hope to hear from you soon!

A couple extra points: We require all volunteers scheduled to work on-site to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and present proof of vaccination before they start their shift. If you have questions regarding this, feel free to email or message us.  Please wear season-appropriate clothing as our warehouse is not a climate-controlled environment. Closed-toe shoes are required.

This is a weekly or bi-weekly volunteer position that requires some training and at least a 9-month time commitment. Additionally, volunteers are required to have a valid driver's license and be comfortable lifting heavy boxes upwards of 30 lbs, and be available on Thursday afternoons for a two-hour interval between 1-5 pm.

Volunteer: Join our Client Services team!

At North Helpline we assist neighbors with more than nutrition. Our Client Services team invites neighbors to access personal and household items including diapers, incontinence products, pet products, and hygiene items to further alleviate financial pressures.

The Client Services volunteer positions include greeting neighbors outdoors and distributing numbers, checking in neighbors in our database outdoors when their number is called or registering new members to access our services inside our Client Services office and providing them with resources both within our organization and in the community. Volunteers interested in Client Services are invited to join us for distribution first to have an understanding of the needs of this position.

Like all of our staff and volunteers, volunteers in the CS office positions are required to have compassion and treat everyone with respect. The Client Services office volunteers often work independently, with another volunteer member or a staff member.  To meet our neighbors needs we ask for everyone to arrive on time for their scheduled shift.

Our current Client Services volunteer opportunities are:

Wednesdays 8:30 am to 11:15 am and 11:00 am to 2:00 pm Thursdays from 3:30 pm to 7:00 pm Saturdays from 8:30 am to 11:15 am and 11:00 am to 2:00 pm
