ROOTS is a young adults emergency shelter serving individuals between the ages of 18-25. We service up to 45 guests per night with a safe place to sleep, warm meals and other essential services. We need volunteers to provide social support and build meaningful relationships with the folks who stay with us. Additionally, our volunteers help facilitate and maintain the shelter space through various tasks. We welcome all unique bodies and value inclusivity and diversity amongst all people in the shelter space, including our volunteers. You must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer with us.

At ROOTS, we use every day to make a difference in the lives of homeless youth. Overnight volunteers are crucial in this effort and make the biggest impact to the individuals we serve.

In-shelter Overnight Shift (This shift starts at 7pm on Monday and ends at 8:30am the following morning). Overnight volunteers stay overnight at our shelter along with our guests. Volunteers work in teams and directly with our staff to help ensure emotional stability and physical safety within the space. Between 7PM and 10:30PM, overnight volunteers will assist in tasks identical to evening volunteers. After lights out, overnight shifts are broken up into four 2-hour awake shifts. Overnight Volunteers are asked to remain awake for one of these 2-hour shifts, and will sleep for the remaining 6 hours at our shelter. During the awake shift, Overnight Volunteers are responsible for assisting in walk-arounds of the room every 10 minutes. During walk-arounds volunteers are available for guests who require emergency assistance, and complete guest laundry. We ask that Overnight Volunteers commit to one shift per week; bedding, dinner, and breakfast are all provided. All overnight volunteers will be supported by shelter staff at all times and they are there to address any questions or concerns during your shift. We highly appreciate the commitment of Overnight Volunteers and see them as crucial support in the operation of the shelter space. 

For the safety of all guests, volunteers, and staff, we require all volunteers to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and to wear face masks throughout the duration of their shift. Volunteers are free to bring in their own face masks or other PPE, and we can provide gloves and disposable face masks on-site. The wellbeing of our volunteers is of the utmost importance, and we only ask you to commit to volunteering based on an individual assessment of personal health and comfort. Each shift, your Volunteer Supervisor or other staff will ask you questions listed on the ROOTS COVID-19 screening guide and will take your temperature. Staff and guests are screened in the same way upon entering the space. We work to provide the safest environment for all bodies in the shelter and we appreciate your consideration.

In-shelter Evening+ Shift (7pm-1:00am): ROOTS evening+ volunteers work to ensure the emotional stability and physical safety of individuals in the shelter space while also socializing with guests and building community. From 7pm-8:30pm, prior to the shelter opening, evening+ volunteers work as part of a volunteer team to disinfect all shelter beds, deep clean the shelter space, and prepare the space for guests. When shelter opens at 9:00pm, evening+ volunteers will help serve pre-made meals, hand out hygiene supplies and bedding, sign guests in and out of restrooms, and supervise guest activities such as computer time and smoke breaks. At 10:30, after lights out, evening+ volunteers perform overnight tasks such as assisting in walk-arounds of the room every 10 minutes, being available for guests who require emergency assistance, and completing guest laundry. Shelter staff will be available at all times to support volunteers throughout the evening. Evening+ volunteers are highly committed members of ROOTS, and we value this commitment to ensure that the shelter runs smoothly and efficiently at night.

Description

We are looking for group mentor facilitators and group mentors for our virtual Monday evening sessions.

Students in our Monday evening sessions are in 9th and 10th grade, attend school in King County, and are graduates of our middle school Mentoring Circles. Training is provided along with a curriculum from “A New Way Forward Manual”. Weekly planning sessions are held to help facilitators and mentors prepare for the upcoming session.

The 4C recruits' youth and programming is delivered by trained mentors and professionals. We are calling interested volunteers, men and women, students from community colleges and local universities to apply. One person can make a huge difference.

MENTORING YOUTH IN KING COUNTY – A POWERFUL FORCE FOR CHANGE

The 4C Coalition is a community-based nonprofit founded in 1999 that helps Black and other youth of color succeed in school and in life. We offer one-on-one mentoring, group mentoring and tutoring to youth who are ages 12- to 17-year-olds and reside in King County. 4C Mentor Program is recruiting committed and caring BIPOC mentors who will be matched with a youth . The 4C Mentor Program target population is specifically designed to reach the mentoring needs of at risk youth. We are recruiting volunteers who feel passionately about changing young lives for the better. 4C Coalition mentors receive an initial two-hour virtual orientation and training followed by ongoing planning sessions and support with 4C staff. Trained mentors make a one-year commitment to meet with their mentee once a week. Because of Covid, mentors meet in person twice a month and virtually twice a month. Volunteer Mentors age requirement 21-over .  

We are also accepting individuals who may be interested in assisting in  the office, at community festivals and events – or would like to raise community awareness about our services, we would love to talk to you as well.

We are looking for enthusiastic Men and Women of "Color" to come join our movement to positively influence the- present lives and future lives of our growing youth of color. We are inviting you to become a group mentoring facilitators and volunteer group mentors. there is also opportunity for one-on-one mentoring as well. You can make a difference in our community. We provide group mentoring in two Seattle Schools – Denny International Middle School in West Seattle as well as Meany Middle School, on Capitol Hill. Student scholars are in 6th and 7th grade. Group Mentoring is gender specific. We provide mentoring to 20 boys and 20 girls at each school site during school hours. Interested person’s must be fully vaccinated in following Seattle Public Schools, 4C and Seattle CARES COVID precautions.

The 4C recruits' youth and programming called The Rising, Elevating Educatiin,Expectations and Self-Esteem, is delivered by Seattle CARES trained mentors and professionals. We are happy to announce that we have begun a major project to expand our Youth & Neighborhood Engagement program! That means doing what we've been doing by activating the Safeway parking lot every Friday, only at more locations and on more days of the week!

In order to make sure we can effectively activate safe spaces throughout the neighborhood, we're calling on members of the community to volunteer alongside our Corner Greeters on a weekly basis! These neighborhood engagement efforts will contribute to providing interventions aimed directly at place-based risk factors that can lead to youth crime in five hotspot ("pearl") locations.

The mission of The Light Collective is to create hope-oriented community where families who have a child with cancer can build resilience and share delight. The primary program we’re currently running is our Matchbox Day program—a monthly family fun day that includes:

The TLC Board of Directors works together to create and maintain the strategies and policies that allow us to achieve our mission and grow our vision. The Board also helps raise funds to support the operation of TLC and monitors the performance of TLC staff.

TLC launched in November 2020. The Board of Trustees of the Renton Historical Society is a 15-member group that provides fundraising, oversight, and outreach for the Renton History Museum. This dynamic group is involved in the implementation of our Museum Master Plan, as we move toward more innovative and creative programs and a closer connection with our community. Board members commit to three-year terms and have the opportunity to serve in leadership roles as officers and committee chairs. Attendance at monthly Board meetings is required (currently meeting over Zoom), and Board members are expected to contribute a reasonable annual cash gift. Time commitment is about 4-8 hours a month, depending on involvement.

Kitsap Homes of Compassion provides permanent supported housing for individuals that are homeless and suffer with a debilitating disorder- physical or mental health.  We need House Managers to commit to support our homes.  Each home needs a volunteer to be a point of contact, ensure that everyone in the house is safe and treated fairly.  House Managers typically spent 10-15 hours a week on site, over the phone or texting with residents and helping them to be at home.  Each home has around 3-5 residents.

Our volunteer mentors help us to serve over 300 youth every year—they are vital to making a positive impact in the lives of youth! 

We intentionally keep our classes small to facilitate student-adult interaction and relationship-building, allowing us to create a healthy, positive environment. Each class is limited to 10-13 students with one teaching artist and 1-3 volunteer adult mentors.  

We place mentors in each of our classes to assist teaching artists and to build positive relationships with youth. Mentors commit between 40 and 50 hours of their time each eight-week quarter, participating in all classes and the End of Quarter Show. During the eight-week Fall, Winter and Spring Quarters, the mentoring schedule is:

Our Summer Quarter and Partner Program mentoring needs vary

We are seeking mentors who have experience working with underserved youth and in a field of photography, and are willing to learn and implement our youth development strategies for building a positive community.

Mentors in the Digital Photography classes need to be comfortable using Adobe Lightroom, and using the manual settings of DSLR cameras. Mentors in the Black & White Photography classes need to be comfortable using 35mm film cameras, processing film by hand, and printing photos in a darkroom.

Our stores are open Monday through Saturday and volunteers can sign up for a Full day shift (10:15am-6:00pm) or a half day shift in the morning (10:15am-2:00pm), or the afternoon (2:00pm-6:00pm).
At our stores, you will have the opportunity to participate in tasks such as, assisting customers, cleaning/organizing, or taking in furniture.

This position is located in Maple Falls, Washington at the Foothills Food Bank. About 35 mins from Bellingham.

During these sessions, volunteers will be dancing with the child(ren) and assist with dance skills and styles. We will provide music and space for dancing, dance activities and/or games that volunteers wish to do. This will be a direct, in-person service.

Volunteers will sort and organize the clothing bank at the Center. Volunteers will sort the clothes based on type (i.e. pants, shirts, undergarments), as well as, gender. Since these clothes will be given to those in need, it would be easier to gather the clothes if they were sorted by type and gender. Boxes/bins and shelving space will be provided for organization and sorting. This will be a direct, in-person service.

Volunteering hours will be from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Hours may change if there are not a lot of clothes in the clothing bank. 

There will be further instructions and guidelines provided once the volunteer is accepted. Volunteers will also go through orientation/training once a volunteer.

Volunteers will work one-on-one with children, as well as, in groups depending on the activity and level of need with tutoring. Volunteers are needed every Tuesday from 7:30am - 12:30pm (or whenever you can arrive) to distribute food to Foothills Food Bank customers! Volunteers will help the grocery-style model pantry run efficiently by restocking shelves, guiding guests through their shopping experience (answering questions, finding products for them, etc), and a bit of clean up at the end.

We are looking for someone to pick up bread from Franz Bakery on Kelly Rd, and deliver it to the Foothills Food Bank one or more Monday's a month. A larger vehicle is preferable.

Volunteers will sort and organize the clothing bank at the Center. Volunteers will sort the clothes based on type (i.e. pants, shirts, undergarments), as well as, gender. Since these clothes will be given to those in need, it would be easier to gather the clothes if they were sorted by type and gender. Boxes/bins and shelving space will be provided for organization and sorting. This will be a direct, in-person service.

Volunteering hours will be from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Hours may change if there are not a lot of clothes in the clothing bank. 

There will be further instructions and guidelines provided once the volunteer is accepted. Volunteers will also go through orientation/training once a volunteer.

Whatcom County Health Department in partnership with a community collaborative, Whatcom Taking Action,is seeking volunteers and/or interns to support health promotion through developing communication resources for families with a child that has a special health care need. The ideal candidate has a background in health promotion, health equity, education, communication, media or technology and/or a relevant background and experiences. 

Currently seeking volunteers that are available to assist in health promotion through the development and editing of family-friendly materials and providing administrative support. The schedule is flexible but ideally, 5-15 hours/week with a minimum 6-month commitment. 

During this time of COVID, all services and supports will occur remotely. Volunteers will be supervised and supported by Health Department staff.

Be the face of the Renton History Museum! Greeters serve as front desk ambassadors for the museum on Saturdays. Greeters work in pairs in three-hour shifts from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm or 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. They open the museum, welcome visitors, collect admissions, sell gift shop items, provide information, and close the museum. To work as a Greeter, you must have excellent people skills and be able to conduct financial transactions accurately.

Greeters are expected to volunteer at least once a month and to commit to at least six months of service. We are currently most in need of this volunteer position since they run the museum every Saturday. This is a great position if you are looking for a regular commitment or need to fulfill a certain number of community service hours in a set amount of time.

The Museum is currently unable to welcome volunteers due to the pandemic, but we are still accepting applications for future volunteering opportunities in 2022. We will contact you as soon as we are able to host volunteers. Volunteers must pass a background check before working.

Plan and lead a group bike ride and make some friends along the way! 

The Bikery is an all volunteer led community bike shop in Seattle. What better way to make connections than to ride bikes together. The Bikery strives to make biking as inclusive and accessible as possible. 

The Bikery is looking for volunteers to lead group bike rides around the Seattle area on a reoccurring basis.

This will entail:

Route planning

No drop rides are encouraged (~pace of 10 - 12miles per hr) to encourage riders of all levels to join

Leading a group of people on a bike ride through an urban setting

Build nights are a great way for the Bikery to provide a space for folks of all mechanical abilities improve their mechanical skills, and work through the shop’s inventory of donations. The Bikery sells and donates a large amount of bicycles, which is one of the ways we sustain the organization, and be of service to those in need of two-wheeled transportation. The Bikery is brimming with donated bicycles and parts, and every weekend receives more. Build nights are especially helpful in getting those donations tuned and built up, so as to be sold or donated. 

The shop currently has 2-3 build nights a month. Volunteers are welcome to host a build night and share their mechanical knowledge with other interested bicycle enthusiasts.

Due to Covid-19 masks are required whenever in the shop.

Come help us keep our shop operating! The Bikery is open Saturday and Sundays from 12pm - 6PM. Shop Helpers keep the ship running smoothly. You can sign up to volunteer for 3 hour shifts: 12PM - 3pm or 3pm - 6pm.

Shop helpers do not need bike mechanical knowledge but are eager and willing to learn! This is great position for those that would really like to gain the knowledge but aren't quite there yet (you will have plenty of opportunities to learn!). Ski to Sea is Bellingham and Whatcom County’s largest event, made up of seven legs from Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay. After a two-year hiatus, we are beyond excited to host this year's race on May 29th, 2022!

We are seeking volunteers for a number of positions at different locations around Whatcom County. The seven legs of the relay are: Cross Country Skiing, Downhill Ski/Snowboard, Running, Road Bike, Canoe, Cyclocross, and Sea Kayak. We also need volunteers to help with equipment transfer, packet pick-up, course clearing and the finish line.

CoCA Internships: Building Community Through Mentorship & Meaningful Work

ROOTS is a young adult emergency shelter that provides up to 45 guests per night, between the ages of 18-25, with a safe place to sleep, warm meals and other essential services. Volunteers are needed to help facilitate shelter tasks but most importantly provide social support and build meaningful relationships with the folks who stay with us.You must be at least 18 years of age to volunteer with us.

The King County Health Department made a visit to our shelter and completed a health assessment of which we scored an impressively high score for social distancing maintenance, cleaning, and sanitation. This is all thanks to our amazing volunteers who worked to ensure the safety of all guests and members of our ROOTS community! However, in order to continue this level of sanitation and safety for our guests, volunteers, and staff, we are in need of additional volunteers at this moment.

Shelter Prep Shift (7pm-8:30pm): Volunteers will come in before the shelter opens for the evening to disinfect all shelter beds and deep clean the shelter space. We work to limit the number of volunteers during the Sanitation shift to help maintain safe distancing practices.

To ensure the safety of all guests, volunteers, and staff, we require all volunteers to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination and to wear face masks throughout the duration of their shift. Volunteers are free to bring in their own face masks or other PPE, and we can provide gloves and disposable face masks on-site. The wellbeing of our volunteers is of the utmost importance, and we only ask you to commit to volunteering if you are safely able to do so. Upon arriving to each shift, your Volunteer Supervisor or other staff will ask you questions listed on the ROOTS COVID-19 screening guide and will take your temperature. Staff and guests are screened in the same way upon entering the space. We appreciate your understanding in this process.

We would like to move a compost station (see photo above) from one place to other. It's a short distance (less than 1 Kilometer) and on same the property.

We are seeking a volunteer with skills in camera operations and video editing software like Adobe premiere and graphic design skills with proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to share with kids on our after school program.

We are hoping that this individual will be able to help run part of our after school programs by teaching kids (ages 9 to 15) basic camera operation techniques, video editing and graphic design techniques. Based on the individual's availability, we hope to schedule this program once or twice a week running between 2 to 3 hours on each day.

This is a unique opportunity to learn about other cultures (West African) and also get to partake in the greater diversity that makes Washington state so great. Most importantly, the individual would get to have the rewarding experience of contributing meaningfully in building our collectively community by helping teaching kids crucial life-skills.

This program is also geared towards better preparing the youth of our community for the future. Unlike the After School Program, this program assists young adults between the ages 13 to 19 with mentoring, coaching and acquisition of critical life skills that would make them better prepared for the job market and or independent entrepreneurs. This program shall equally support our aim to keep young people off the streets to reduce the risk of deviance, indulgence in drugs and crime.

What subject did you ace in school? NW Education Access is recruiting volunteers to tutor students (16-29) in various locations in King County. 

We have opportunities in multiple locations (King, Pierce, Snohomish County). Our tutoring sessions are predominantly virtual. If a student requests it, tutors can meet with students at public places such as libraries or college campuses throughout King County (in person tutors must be vaccinated). Tutors will schedule sessions with students, and there is a tremendous amount of flexibility. 

There is a current need for tutors who can support writing and American Sign Language practice.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) is the first and last impression of our region for the traveling public.  Our community of volunteers are invaluable ambassadors for both the airport and the Puget Sound region.  Located at key information desks throughout the airport, volunteers focus on elevating the travel experience for SEA’s travelers.  Whether providing directions to rideshares, looking up gate information on the FlySEA App, making dining suggestions, or providing tourist recommendations – SEA volunteers are invaluable members of the SEA Customer Service team and airport community.

The Environmental Education Intern will assist with classroom and field instruction for K-12 programs throughout Skagit County. Content will focus on salmon ecology and freshwater habitat restoration.

Northwest Hospitality (NWH) curates a list of resources available to unhoused neighbors and others with unstable housing. This list is shared publicly on our website and also used to print hardcopies of local resource lists for distribution with hygiene kits in projects with groups throughout Washington state. As we grow the list we can better serve our neighbors here in Kitsap and around Washington.

Resource Curators will have access to NWH's online database of resources which populates both the online tool and is used to generate the local print versions by county.

Resouce Curators will check existing entries for errors/updates, fill in gaps in the resource categories for all of the counties throughout Washington State, and search for opportunities to include new resources and categories in our resource tools.

This volunteer opportunity is entirely remote and very low-pressure. It would be excellent for anybody who is interested in going into social services as it will help you familiarize yourself with the resources available to people in our state.

Our Ready, Set, Read-Tacoma! program is an early childhood literacy program designed to help prepare children for kindergarten in Tacoma Public Schools. This program is introduces children over the age of 3 to early literacy and STEAM concepts and is offered for free to families with children in the community. Help the program in a variety of ways:

Administrative Assistant: Help our Coordinator with prize distribution, public outreach events, phone calls and data entry. You’d be able to do this at any time, for however long.

Library Assistant: Checking in/out books, reshelving, data entry. You’d set your own times for this task.

This volunteer shift takes place at the East Whatcom Regional Resource Center (EWRRC), which is about 40 minutes outside of the city of Bellingham. We know that this can be a far drive for some and we really appreciate your willingness to come out and volunteer with us.

We are in the process of establishing a Shared Housing program in Kitsap County. Residents will be newly released homeless prisoners who are already in the process of recovery from drugs and/or alcohol misuse. Housing source will be repurposed homes slated for demolition in approximately a year. We are using the Weld Seattle model, and are working closely with them. No drugs or alcohol will be allowed on the property.

Think of this as a halfway house, providing stable housing where the former inmate is able to continue the recovery process that was started behind bars. We help each person to become physically, mentally, and financially capable of living on their own. In nearly every case, this is not possible when the inmate is released into homelessness.

We are looking to add two board members who are familiar with homelessness, preferably the homeless population in Kitsap County. The board meets once a month for between 60 and 90 minutes.

God’s Li’l Acre Day Center offers laundry, showers, hygiene supplies, companionship & community, a clothing closet, storage, mailing address, food, and a community kitchen. It also offers a space to just "be" for folks who otherwise don't have one. 

We are committed to maintaining this vital resource for our community members experiencing homelessness throughout the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteers at GLA help around the space in a variety of ways - distributing bus tickets, cleaning, sanitizing, organizing donations, or simply being present and listening. Successful GLA volunteers are flexible, personable, and great at taking initiative.

GLA is a trauma-informed, peaceful space for people experiencing homelessness to relax and recharge amid a chaotic environment on the street. Volunteers and staff at GLA seek to affirm the creativity, resiliency, generosity, skills, assets, and giftedness of each person.

Help create a dementia-friendly community through our weekly enrichment class, the Gathering Place. Volunteers converse with class participants, assist with writing and drawing exercises and other activities, help make reminder calls, and enjoy the company of our participants. Edible Hope Kitchen in Ballard seeks a volunteer driver with auto insurance to pick up donated food for our program that has been serving the homeless population for more than 30 years. We have a need for pick up in south Seattle (815 S 96th St, Seattle, WA 98108) Wednesday mornings at 7am that needs to be delivered to our building in Ballard (14 miles). Thursdays we are looking for a driver who can pick up food at the Ballard Market (1400 NW 56th St, Seattle, WA 98107) and deliver to our building in Ballard (0.6miles).

Edible Hope Kitchen in Ballard has been serving brunch to the homeless population every Monday-Friday for more than 30 years. We seek volunteers to work in the kitchen preparing food, washing dishes, or cooking. Our food is served "buffet style" where volunteers put food onto plates and serve guests at their table. This also includes serving drinks. Available shifts are Monday-Friday anytime between 8am-1pm with food serving being done from 9am-12pm. No experience is required.

As a volunteer mentor, you will build a unique, 1-to-1 relationship with a young person in your community. But you won’t be on your own—our staff is always available with coaching and resources to spark ideas and navigate relationship development. We provide training, resources, and support, to our mentors throughout the entire match relationship. 

Our goal is to support mentor-mentee relationships that will evolve into long-lasting friendships. We are committed to getting to know each of our volunteers and each of our families through an extensive interview and enrollment process in order to find each participant a great fit. Because we value quality over quantity, we ask that each volunteer comes in with strong communication, and the expectation that it can take several months to be matched with your “Little,” but that it will be worth the wait. 

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound is now offering in-person, hybrid, and virtual models for our  matches, and our Match Support team will work with you to create a plan that is best suited to your comfort level and safety needs.

Program Requirements:
1. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate.
2. We ask for a minimum of a one-year commitment. This begins at the time that you are matched. To be sure a one-year commitment works for you, please consider all that you have done in the last year and whether or not this program is a good fit for your current lifestyle.
3. Matches meet for a minimum of 4 hours per month over the course of 2-4 separate visits throughout the month. This usually breaks down to about 1 hour per week, but can be adjusted to fit your and your mentee's schedule.

MVCC is committed to helping food insecure children get access to supplemental food items each week.  This position involves putting together bags containing breakfast, lunch, and snack items to be distributed to kids in the FME area over the summer.  Generally between 150-200 bags will be packed during a shift.  Must be able to lift up to 15lbs.

Perinatal Support Washington (PS-WA) is a statewide non-profit committed to shining a light on perinatal mental health to support all families and communities. We believe all parents should receive appropriate, timely, and culturally relevant care from conception to baby's first birthday.

Our toll-free telephone support "Warm Line" has been operating since 1991, providing peer support to parents in need. We partner with local organizations to provide free and low-cost new parent support groups, create or expand perinatal mental health programs, and advocate for change in Washington State. In 2020, we trained 900 health care providers in identification, assessment, and treatment of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. We do all of this with the help of our dedicated staff, board, and volunteers.

AofH is a 501 (C)(3) holding non profit and is seeking volunteers to assist in building awareness about the rising number of homeless and unaccompanied youth in King County as well as raising funds to support our holistic programming for At-Risk Youth.

Awareness building will take place in pre-planned locations like Green Lake and Steward Park. This will include an awareness table with brochures, flyers and other relevant materials to tell the story of AofH, our mission, services provided, our goals for the community and the financial needs of the organization. There will be ways to donate at the awareness table.

Fundraising will take place at awareness tables as well as some cold calling and emailing calls to action to recipients. Leads and scripts for fundraising will be provided.

All funds raised will directly support free services to At-Risk Youth.
