Celebrate Make A Difference Day and Arbor Day with the City of Bellingham and Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) as we care for Cornwall Memorial Park! Together, we will plant native trees and shrubs and remove invasive weeds near Squalicum Creek to improve water quality, recover downstream salmon habitat, and restore our urban forest and understory habitat for wildlife. This work party will build upon urban forest restoration efforts that are part of the new Cornwall Memorial Park Forest Restoration Project

This event is partnering with Birchwood Food Desert Fighters (BFDF) to collect unopened donations for their efforts in promoting equitable food access to the community. BFDF supports our community through weekly events, food share boxes, food delivery, farming, advocacy, and more. Volunteers are encouraged to bring shelf-stable donations to this work party to support BFDF's work.

*Please note that this work party is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.*

All ages, abilities, and experience levels welcome. Unaccompanied youth under age 18 must provide a City & NSEA Youth Liability Release Form (downloadable PDF)  signed by their legal guardian. Participants under age 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. This event will conclude with some brief closing remarks and free pizza.

You need: Weather-appropriate clothing, long pants, closed-toe shoes, and a full water bottle.

We provide: Tools, gloves, instruction, and light refreshments, including free Tony’s coffee and free pizza from Pizza Time and Zeeks Pizza, all generously donated for this event. Bellingham residents can also take a free tree sapling home with them.

Where to meet: Please meet at the field near the main parking lot at Cornwall Memorial Park located near the intersection of Meridian St. and Squalicum Way. Parking, free bike parking, and the sign-in tent will be located here. Event staff will then lead groups of volunteers to the work site.

Travel by bike or foot: The work party site is accessible by bike or foot. Find your bike route by visiting cob.org/bike and your walking route by viewing a trail map of Cornwall Memorial Park [PDF]. A free bike valet located near the sign-in tents will be provided by Let’s Bike Bellingham!

Travel by bus: Several Whatcom Transportation Authority bus routes serve the area, with two nearby stops (Meridian St at Birchwood Ave and Meridian St at Victor St) available for you to use. Find your route using the online trip planner at ridewta.com.

he American Red Cross is seeking compassionate, dependable volunteers to join our Disaster Action Team (DAT) and help families in Washington when they experience a disaster.

Disasters can happen at any time. DAT volunteers respond to local emergencies such as home fires and other disasters, providing immediate support, resources, information, and a caring presence to people during some of their most difficult moments.

What You’ll Do

·       Respond to local disaster incidents as part of a Red Cross team

·       Provide compassionate support to individuals and families affected by disasters

·       Help connect clients with emergency assistance and community resources

·       Complete basic disaster response documentation

·       Work alongside trained Red Cross volunteers and staff

Time Commitment

Volunteers must commit to a minimum of two, 12-hour on call shifts per month. You are welcome to take additional shifts if your schedule allows.

On call shifts mean you are available and ready to respond if a disaster occurs during your scheduled shift. You do not report to a location unless you are contacted for a response.

What We’re Looking For

You don't need prior disaster response experience. We provide the training you need to serve effectively.

We’re looking for people who are compassionate and comfortable supporting people during stressful situations, reliable and willing to respond when available, comfortable working as part of a team, able to communicate clearly and respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, and willing to complete required Red Cross training.

We are especially seeking volunteers who are bilingual in English and Spanish to help support and connect with our diverse community.

The City of Sammamish Restoration and Volunteer team manages several restoration sites at various Sammamish Parks with the help of stewards and community volunteers. Volunteers can help restore native vegetation by removing noxious weeds, laying down mulch and planting native plants.

Partners INW is a local nonprofit providing essential resources to individuals and families throughout our community, including food, clothing, diapers, hygiene products, and other basic necessities.

Why This Project Is Happening

When the Spokane Complex Fires impacted our community, the response was incredible. Individuals, businesses, churches, schools, and organizations stepped up with an overwhelming amount of donated resources to help our neighbors affected by the fires.

We became a major collection and distribution point for those donations, and while the immediate crisis has slowed, the work behind the scenes is not finished!

Our free Clothing Bank store is looking for a friendly volunteer to help create a welcoming and positive shopping experience for our guests. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys interacting with people, staying organized, and being part of a mission that provides dignity and essentials to our community.

What you’ll do:

• Welcome and greet guests as they enter the Clothing Bank

• Help explain the simple shopping process and guidelines

Free online training will be provided and can count towards nursing continuing education units. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 10-14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice.

Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. We supply all the training you need.

When a large-scale disaster impacts a community, multiple agencies and resources are needed to walk alongside them to provide response and recovery support. As a Community Engagement & Partnerships (CEP) Service Associate you’ll connect with local partners to build capacity, coordinate activities, integrate expertise, and ensure that all disaster-affected communities, including traditionally underserved populations, have access to Red Cross services.

Your volunteer role involves implementing the CEP plan, engaging with organizations, and supporting multi-agency collaborative efforts to promote regional engagement and inclusive partnerships.

When housing is disrupted in communities due to a large disaster it can be tough for many individuals to secure new long term consistent/reliable housing. The Shelter Resident Transition Service Associate assists shelter residents and disaster victims create long term personal plans to overcome obstacles and transition into a stable housing solution. They play an important role in minimizing disaster caused displacement and aid in long term recovery. 

Do you have a Flexible schedule that would allow you to deploy for two weeks to support communities impacted by disasters? The Red Cross is looking to train willing individuals over 18 who want to alleviate human suffering by shortening the time of a disaster caused by displacement. KMRE 88.3 FM is looking for volunteer news anchors to join our community radio news team. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys local news, has a clear speaking voice, and wants to contribute to community media in Whatcom County.

KMRE news anchors read and record the station's daily newscast for broadcast. Anchors should be comfortable delivering news in an active, conversational style — engaging and energetic without sounding over-the-top or overly dramatic. News scripts are prepared and sent to anchors through the KMRE internal Slack channel. They then review the script, record the newscast, edit the recording as needed to ensure it is clean and ready for broadcast. They then insert the finished newscast into the station's playback system.

The time committment is one shift per week--Approximately 2–3 hours per week, depending on experience and familiarity with the process.

A consistent commitment to your assigned time slot is essential.Because KMRE's newscasts are scheduled for broadcast, reliability is one of the most important parts of this volunteer position. We are looking for people who can make a regular commitment to their assigned shift and communicate promptly if an occasional conflict arises.

You don't need professional broadcast experience. We are looking for volunteers who: Have a clear, understandable speaking voice. Can read news copy naturally and confidently. Can convey energy and interest without being overly dramatic.Are comfortable learning basic audio recording and editing. Can follow a script while making small adjustments for natural delivery. Are dependable and able to commit to a regular weekly shift. Have an interest in local news and community radio.Broadcast or audio experience is helpful, but not required.

Habitat for Humanity is in search of a volunteer willing to donate a couple hours of their time several days a week towards helping us manage our clothing lifecycle! The ideal person will be in charge of wrangling all of our clothing donations into large bags and then placing them into our baler while also keeping a keen eye out for sellable merchandise. They'll also be asked to check the clothing section for cleanliness and order when they are here; working to enhance the shopping experience by removing empty hangers, decorating, picking up dropped items, organzing the area, and redressing our mannequin model.

Our clothing baler makes 700 pound bales that are then sold to a 2nd party to help us generate fundraising from overstock textiles!

Lab & Research Committee: Help develop in-lab mentorship opportunities, build scientific partnerships and collaborations, and create new ways to make hands-on science more accessible and impactful.

Our free Clothing Bank store is looking for a friendly volunteer to help create a welcoming and positive shopping experience for our guests. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys interacting with people, staying organized, and being part of a mission that provides dignity and essentials to our community.

What you’ll do:

• Welcome and greet guests as they enter the Clothing Bank

• Help explain the simple shopping process and guidelines

• Assist guests at checkout and learn you will learn how to use our easy computer check-out system

• Ensure shoppers stay within the permitted item allotment

• Keep the store looking great by straightening bins and pulling empty hangers

• Restock shelves and help replenish diapers and newborn layettes in our Diaper Bank

• Help bring freshly sorted clothing from the back to restock the store floor

Think of it as running a little boutique that serves our neighbors in need. If you enjoy organizing, light retail-style tasks, and making people feel welcome, you’ll love this role.

Looking for a meaningful way to give back to your community? Join our team as a Food Bank Floater and play a key role in keeping our food bank running smoothly by stepping in wherever help is needed most. In this flexible volunteer position, you'll work alongside a dedicated team of fellow volunteers and perform a variety of tasks based on the day’s needs, with guidance from our staff. Tasks may include building food carts, stocking shelves, bagging produce and collecting empty carts from the parking lot so they can be rebuilt with food!

What We’re Looking For: Adaptable and dependable, with a can-do attitude.  Friendly and comfortable working with people from all walks of life.  Willing to work indoors and outdoors as needed. 

Able to lift up to 30 pounds for stocking shelves and stay active on your feet. 

Run carts out and load food boxes into cars. This job has some interaction with the public and requires some heavy lifting. Please park in the Church parking lot, on the north side of the building. Closed toe shoes required, Dress accordingly to weather.

Bellingham At Home (BAH), a non-profit membership organization, is a virtual Village in Bellingham WA empowering older adults to stay active and engaged while living in their own homes and neighborhoods.  It is a program of the Whatcom Council on Aging.

The Village is powered by volunteers who provide “good neighbor” assistance to older folks in our community. Volunteers provide transportation to medical appointments and other services in Bellingham, take members shopping, provide companionship, complete light home repairs and garden maintenance, and other tasks as needed.  (BAH does NOT provide medical assistance, personal care, nor ongoing cleaning and maintenance tasks.)

If you are searching for opportunities to use your skills to support the Bellingham community and enjoy talking with interesting people who have many life experiences to share, you’d make a great BAH volunteer. Most assistance requests are for 2-hour time slots and you can let us know when you are available.  There is no weekly commitment; flexibility to meet your own schedule. BAH members reward our volunteers with their most grateful appreciation!

We have office shifts available in the mornings and afternoons.

A six-month minimum commitment required.

Develop partnerships with other community partners such as Cheney Parks & Rec, EWU, and Cheney Public Schools to create, or bring to Cheney, history programs and events.  

We are looking to re-start collaborations with institutions in the community to connect history with activities, especially for young people. From classroom visits with items from the museum to engage students in learning local history, to activities students could do in school as part of their curriculum, we can help young people engage with history and place.

There are also opportunities to bring exhibits, speakers, etc. to the community for a broader view of our history.

The program coordinator will build the partnerships to make these activities possible. Much of this activity can be done on your own schedule without having to physically be at the museum. 

Join our Volunteer team to help Meals on Wheels in King County fight hunger! As a Meals on Wheels Volunteer, you will belong to a team committed to helping homebound seniors maintain their health and independence with nutritious food, personal contact, and caring service.

We are in need of a volunteer to deliver meals in West Seattle Wednesday mornings, as needed when one of the weekly drivers will be away. Drivers arrive around 8:30 am and are typically done with their route in 1 to 2 hours. Training is provided and mileage is reimbursable while making deliveries.

Qualifications: Good communication and people skills, flexibility, attention to detail, and a commitment to the well-being of homebound elders. This is an on-going volunteer commitment.

Requirements: Complete an application, consent to a background check, be able to lift 15lbs and navigate stairs, be at least 18 years of age, and have a Washington state driver's license and auto insurance.

Wednesday afternoons from 12:00 to 3:00 or 3:00 to 6:00pm and Thursday mornings from 8:30am to 12:30 pm involve distribution and working with the public.

Once you sign up for a shift, consider it confirmed. Please arrive about 15 minutes early for your first shift to fill out a volunteer application and waiver along with getting a brief orientation.

This volunteer role may include the following tasks:

Front Desk:  Assist with counting and bagging items upon checkout

Sorting: Separate out anything that has any of the following traits : stains, broken zippers, missing buttons, rips, etc. Make sure everything is in good enough condition that you would gladly gift it to a friend or family member. 

Hanging: Hang items according to posted signage. Receive donations as they come in during service hours. Perform any other extra tasks the clothing bank manager needs.

You may be placed in other departments help out as needed. Hours can be flexible, please ask.

Please park away from the building during service times Wednesdays 3-6pm and Thursdays 10am to 12:30 to make it easier for clients to load their food, clothing or laundry.

Looking for a way to give back to your community?

Invest in Youth is a Seattle-based nonprofit organization that provides free after-school tutoring to local elementary students in Seattle Public Schools.

If you're looking for a way to get involved or give back to your community, this could be your opportunity! Invest in Youth is looking for role-model tutors to work one-on-one with elementary students at local schools, including Beacon Hill International, Roxhill Elementary and Sanislo Elementary (both in West Seattle), in addition to Thurgood Marshall Elementary (in the Squire Park neighborhood of the Central District).

Tutoring begins in October, runs through May and takes place once every week at each school.

Each tutor is matched with the same student for the whole school year, and the pair works together playing math games, reading stories or working on homework, for one hour each week. Educational materials and activities, training and support, and heartfelt appreciation are provided at every session.
