Our unique model places trained site coordinators inside schools to identify at-risk students. Working with school leaders and community partners, the site coordinator provides services and supports through two levels. One level focuses on school-wide needs and the second level provides individual case management supports to address the needs of high-risk students. Our site coordinators help link existing services to students for their identified needs. CIS recruits and trains hundreds of community volunteers each year to work as mentors, speakers and tutors who provide consistent adult guidance, life skills modeling, academic assistance and set the expectation for success in school and in life. This time of transition is filled with myriad changes: increased responsibilities, peer pressure, confusion and lack of motivation, in addition to natural changes. This is the time when young adults are building their self-esteem and their confidence. Unfortunately, many students go through these changes alone because they don’t know where to turn. They feel misunderstood by their peers, or maybe have difficult relationships with their family. These formative years are when they love and rely on friends and need the most authentic support. This is where you are important. As a volunteer mentor, you are that friend and support system. Through spending time together, having fun and enjoying each other, your student partner will become more confident and comfortable in his or her own skin. Your mentee will have a glimpse of your life and experiences, which many times are vastly different than theirs. In return, you will be welcomed into your student’s life, as you create the foundation of newfound knowledge and friendship. As a mentor, you will spend time with your youth three times a month: twice one-on-one, and once during our monthly group workshops. Even if you are busy, if you have four free hours a month, you can make a difference. A key part of our program is building a community for our youth; along with one-on-one time spent with you, everyone attends monthly program sponsored outings. While these outings appear to be simply for fun, they have a large learning component, and in them we discuss topics important to our students, such as body image and confidence, bullying, communication, dating, and family. These outings are scheduled once a month and vary in location to allow for variety to the group and scheduling. Think back to your middle school experience. How amazing would it have been to have had a mentor – a person dedicated to your success – to look up to and from whom to gain benefit? By giving just hours each month, you can become a permanent good in a young person’s life. We all deserve to become the best version of ourselves that we can be. Sign up for more information and you could give a middle school youth the love, support, and friendship they need. Volunteer: Seeking new members for Board of DirectorsThe Children's Center at Burke Gilman Gardens is seeking community volunteers to serve on its Board. This nonprofit childcare center and early learning program provides high quality services to roughly 60 families in north Seattle. TCC is committed to helping children of all backgrounds grow into enthusiastic, kind and confident learners by providing a broad curriculum designed to enhance their social, physical and cognitive development. As a Board, we make strategic decisions based on our core values of inclusion, safety, respect and quality. TCC has a unique structure as it is associated with the Burke Gilman Place Public Development Authority, which includes the Ronald McDonald House, Provail housing, Burke-Gilman Apartments (subsidized and market-rate housing), and housing under the auspices of the Capitol Hill Housing Improvement Program. Serving on the Board of Directors provides an opportunity to connect with other members of the Seattle education, nonprofit, and business community, build experience with nonprofit boards, and to create meaningful difference in the Northeast Seattle community. The Board is a group of 3-year-term volunteers who meet monthly to offer strategic vision, financial oversight, and tangible assistance to our Executive Director and program staff. We operate within the context of the Center’s Mission, Vision and Values. Current Board members represent a broad range of professional experiences. Background or experience that can diversify the perspectives of the Board, or make it more reflective of the community we serve including race, ethnicity, family structure, and household income, are welcomed. Board members attend monthly 2-hour board meetings (free childcare provided), and contribute to special projects outside of meetings. While the time demands can vary due to unexpected issues, 3 - 6 hours a month is an average commitment (inclusive of meetings). Serving on the Board has no impact on admission or tuition, there is no compensation for board efforts, nor is there development expectation of board members. Our 2018 focus is on facilities expansion, while continuing to hone our longer-term strategic planning, with ongoing attention paid to engaging TCC staff in our work and providing value and connection to the communities we serve. We continue to refine and improve our systems and structures to support the long-term health of the Center, and proactively care for the facility. If you are ever interested in attending a Board meeting or volunteering for a term, please click the "respond" button and we'll get in touch with details. We need a wide array of skills and perspectives to do our best work, and would love to hear from you! We’d also appreciate you passing this opportunity to others who might be interested (including those outside the TCC community). Thank you! The Children’s Center Board of Directors
