Volunteer: Board Members & Volunteers

Come join the Room Circus team!  Room Circus's Board of Directors is an "active board" responsible for activities such as fundraising, marketing, financial over-site, supporting staff, and most importantly, being ambassadors to the community. The VP Board meets the fourth Monday of the month, in the Judkins Park neighborhood, and maintains email discussions and pop-up meetings between formal meetings as needed. General Board members meet quarterly, although they are welcome to attend the monthly meetings as well. Although we have our separate functions, we work as a team and help one another when needed.

Current needs:

- Secretary (VP board position): Primary duty is taking minutes at board meetings. Signatures are required periodically. A few other minor duties.

- Treasurer (VP board position): Our office manager takes care of the day-to-day financial matters, but the treasurer would help with the more global plan. Treasurer is needed for "check & balances" to make sure we have two eyes on the flow of money.

- Corporate Sponsorship (board position): Seeks corporate sponsorships.

- Grants (board or volunteer positions): (a) writing grants, (b) seeking out new grants, &/or (c) tracking grants. Ideally, we'd have a person in change of grants (track them), and that person would have volunteers seek out and write grants.

- Volunteer Coordinator (board position): Recruits and manages volunteers.

- Events (board member & volunteers): We usually have 2-3 fundraisers per year with approximately 25-80 guests. Board member helps organize events. Volunteer assists with duties such as: mailings, set-up, assist at event, and clean-up.

- General Board Member or volunteer: There are several other tasks that can be done as a board member or volunteer.

Volunteer: Knit for Students in Need

Do you knit or crochet?

Every year Assistance League of the Eastside volunteers host shopping events for 3,500-4,000 students in need to shop for new school clothing, shoes and coats.  After shopping students delight in selecting a handmade hat or scarf.

We accept donations of knitted/crocheted hats and scarves to fit students in grades K-12.  All colors, designs and styles are desired, but Seahawks and local college (UW, WSU) colors are especially sought after.

Anyone can participate in knitting for students in need.  Not a knitter?  We also accept donations of yarn so that residents of assisted living and senior communities who are on a limited budget but want to knit can participate.

This is a great community service project for youth or a great workplace project - place a collection bin in your office and ask co-workers or customers if they would like to Knit for a Need.

Respond to this opportunity if interested and we can coordinate drop off of the donations.

Need a tax receipt for your donation?  Print the in-kind form and turn it in with your donation.

Volunteer: Make a difference in a middle school student's life. Become a mentor today!

If you are looking for the opportunity to:

-Change a young person's life
-Inspire young adults to be their best
-Coach a student through dialogue and action

-And of course, have fun!

Then you are ready to be a mentor! Our mentors are here to help guide students in creating meaningful, inspired, and empowering lives. Three times per month, as scheduled between our mentors and their students, we come together to build bonds that last a lifetime. The first two meetings each month are designed for our mentors and our young adults to meet one-on-one to develop trust and kinship, and to discuss topics pertinent to students in today’s world. The third meeting brings us all together to convene on what we have learned.

At our monthly workshops the students learn skills that will help them navigate different hardships that are typical during middle school. Some of these topics include, cyber bullying, social media safety, healthy living, and how to avoid drugs and dating violence.

When you and your student meet for your one-on-one time, you are have fun, laugh together, learn together, and get to know each other. As a mentor, you are there as an older, wiser friend, to help guide your student through difficult times, like learning to take responsibility for mistakes, and through incredible times, like watching your friend pass a difficult test, make a sports team or club, or volunteer at local events. Through your actions, you will help your mentee learn how to navigate through the confusions of adolescence by talking through all options and paving a pathway for success and happiness.

Our mentors meet students wherever they may be in life. Each mentor and student relationship is a little different – some matches are going to be more academically driven, while others are going to be more focused on talking about life.

We are all here for a great purpose, and you have the potential to make a young person’s life brighter! Don’t just be, be the best version of you that you can be. Inspire. Create. Teach. Laugh. Guide. Mentor.

Inspire. Create. Teach. Laugh. Guide. Mentor.

Global Acts of Compassion (GAC) is searching for a new Board of Directors as we grow and transition our founders into other staff roles. Volunteering on a nonprofit's Board is a great way to add to your nonprofit resume, learn about the industry, and REALLY make an impact in the world by serving as an integral part of an organization. A very friendly and outgoing veteran is needing your help with light housework. She has been dealing with health issues that are preventing her from reaching high and low places safely. Could you spend 2-3 hours a month helping her dust, clean her floors and spend time chatting with her?

Volunteer: Northwest Seaport Board Opening

Northwest Seaport (www.nwseaport.org) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of our maritime heritage and to the development of maritime-based educational programs and opportunities. We fulfill our mission onboard our fleet of historic vessels:

Arthur Foss, a tugboat built in 1889, the star of the 1933 classic movie Tugboat Annie, and the oldest wooden tugboat in the U.S., Lightship No. 83 “Swiftsure”, built in 1904 and the only lightship with her original steam engine, The halibut schooner Tordenskjold, build in 1911 in Ballard and a veteran of over a century of fishing in the North Pacific. Twilight, a 36’ purse seiner

The Arthur Foss and Lightship No. 83 are registered as National Historic Landmarks. All of our ships provide hands-on platforms for educational programs, public tours, and annual festivals that celebrate workboat culture, boats, music and stories.

Our educational programs range from tugboat storytime for preschoolers to work exchange and boatwright in residence programs for young adults starting their maritime career. We also host the annual Classic Workboat every fall as well as a variety of other public programs throughout the year.

Most of our fundraisers are held onboard our historic ships. They include a St. Patrick’s Day party, Tugboat Happy Hours every Tuesday from mid-July through August, and a fireworks party on the 4th of July. These events, earned income from vessel rentals, and general donations support our operations and educational programs. Most off our restoration efforts are funded through competitive grants.

We have a staff of 1.5 (full-time Executive Director and half time Vessel Manager) as well as a group of regular boatwrights and marine engineers who support our restoration and maintenance efforts on project-specific contracts.

Our board of directors is actively engaged in all aspects of our operation, from writing grants, managing events, and volunteering on our ships to fundraising, providing legal counsel, and building community connections. We are looking for new board members with expertise in any of the following areas:

Fundraising and development Marketing IT Workforce development

The board meets monthly, on our ships in the summer and in board member offices in the winter. Thank you.

Volunteer: Recruiting Board Members

MoNA’s renewed mission and vision, and its policy of free admission has made Northwest art accessible to everyone. The museum’s ambitious programming, acclaimed MoNA Link education program, and expanding outreach efforts ensure that all of our diverse community can be transformed by art experiences.    Now in its 36th year, MoNA has announced strategic goals to serve the community:    1. Become a regional leader in Northwest art  2. Provide access to a pre-eminent collection of Northwest art  3. Offer an outstanding visitor experience  4. Provide a stimulating environment and programming  5. Serve and reflect our diverse community  6. Update infrastructure and facilities  7. Ensure long-term financial sustainability   To achieve these ambitious goals, MoNA’s Board of Trustees will recruit new members from the broader Puget Sound region. Candidates should be advocates for the importance of art and art education, seek to make a difference in their community, and should commit to donor cultivation and stewardship. Sought after skills include information analysis and financial acumen.    Diversity of age, background and experience is encouraged, with particular (though not exclusive) interest in candidates who are under-50, Latino or Native American, LGBTQ and from outside Skagit County. Connection to the business community is a plus.

Volunteer: Grant Writer

Can you write grants? Can you help us obtain the funds to support our needed programs? For over 30 years the Alternative Humane Society has survived based on our fund-raising, adoptions, and donations. We have two great needs that we cannot manage to underwrite on our own: preventing unwanted dog and cat births through spay/neuter assistance and vet bills for the dogs that come to us with severe health issues. We have already saved thousands of animals, educated and supported the community, but it is not enough. With proper funding, we can help to break the cycle of unwanted pet births. We know the funding is there, we need someone with the skills to help us obtain it.

Experience researching grant opportunities. The ability to make initial contacts with grantors; organized and able to follow instructions carefully; skills at writing proposals; persuasive--effective and fluent use of language; willingness to follow through with grant completion activities; able to manage deadlines; ability to pull together information from various sources.

Volunteer: Volunteer School-based Mentors

Communities In Schools of Federal Way mentoring program recruits volunteer mentors from our community and matches them with a student who could benefit from having a consistent, caring adult role-model in their life.  Mentors support young people through their formative years and provide guidance and encouragement through life’s challenges.  Mentor relationships provide stability when a student’s home or school life may be in turmoil, and are key to helping young people stay engaged in school.

In order to be a mentor, volunteers must be over 18 and complete an application that includes a WA State Patrol background check, National Sex Offender Registry and three personal references that can verify your ability to work with youth.  We also have a 1.5 hour New Mentor Training and a short mentor interview.
