We are looking for a photographer & Videographer who will work with us to record events, artifacts, and our programs. Photos and video will be used both for our own archives and for publicity. Some experience required. However, amateur and student photographers are encouraged to contact us.

We need your help!  The Alternative Humane Society relies on the efforts of fund-raising, adoptions and donations to keep helping the animals of Whatcom County.  If you have experience with fundraising, we’d love to hear from you!  Leading a team of dedicated volunteers in planning and implementing fundraising events, and an annual community outreach would your main objective.

The ESL Instructor provides specialized instruction for the purposes of developing the students‘ ability to effectively acquire the English language and to utilize the English language in their daily lives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 Provides a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging instructional strategies.
 Attends professional English Language Acquisition meetings and attends staff meetings as may be requested or as established by the agency.
 Advocates for the program needs that are required to meet the learning needs of English learner.
 Performs such other and not specifically enumerated duties as may be requested by the supervisor.
 Helps navigate students to the appropriate agency personnel in order to address needs and concerns beyond the instructor’s ability to assist.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
 TESOL or TEFL Certification

Public Relations Description:

While working at CAIR-WA, the Event Planning Intern will play a valuable role in planning and managing all logistical aspects of event planning for our annual awards banquet and for full-day youth events to help local American Muslim youth enter careers in media and politics.

Tasks include, but are not limited to: setting numerous appointments with executives via e-mail and phone, maintaining a detailed pre-event registration system, compiling detailed event attendee information, track planning committee members' work to ensure completion, track inventory of all supplies needed for events, vetting and confirming experts to prepare students in these areas; preparing and printing of all event literature; and preparing and disseminating all event marketing.

Civil Rights Case Intake

Our Civil Rights Department handles hundreds of cases each year that range from prejudiced gestures to full blown discrimination against Muslim clients as well as non-Muslims who have been perceived to be Muslim. Casework includes conducting intake interviews, ongoing communication with clients and offending parties, writing advocacy letters, attorney referrals, researching relevant legislation, and database entry. The department also presents "Know-Your-Rights" trainings for local Muslims.

While working with CAIR-WA, the Civil Rights Intern will gain interviewing, investigative, and writing skills from work with diverse clientele to document civil rights abuses. S/he will oversee civil rights cases, as well as assist in documenting and reporting data and educating the community about CAIR's work. In addition, s/he will have access to a number of community events and trainings (depending on scheduling) pertaining to broader civil rights work in Washington State. S/he may be asked to perform other tasks as needed.

Requirements:

Volunteers to coordinate and organize activities at our Emergency Housing Food Bank. The food bank serves upwards of 40 needy families with healthy food and needs volunteers once a week in 3 shifts to help with unloading and organizing food, preparing it for dissemination, and, most importantly, distributing food to the families who need it. Volunteers must be energetic, friendly, interested in interacting with wide range of people, able to effectively organize, and able to work in a team setting. Our current needs are every Wednesday 2 volunteers for the morning shift (9-12) that gets the food unloaded, organized, and the food bank area ready to open at 12 noon. This is a recurring opportunity and needs a strong weekly commitment

The South Seattle College is hosting an exciting new horticulture project and we welcome plant lovers from West Seattle and beyond to join Team Mahonia! You may be familiar with 'Oregon Grape', which is a a part of the genus Mahonia. We are researching over 90 cultivars - many from other regions - to find the best ones for the Pacific Northwest.

Monthly maintenance work parties are set for Third Thursdays (4-6 pm) and Last Saturdays (10 am-noon), where we will also provide snacks, coffee and tea. This is a unique opportunity to participate in ‘citizen science’: not only will you support a one-of-kind project, but you get to witness a wide variety of features as the plants evolve and grow up.

Are you interested in creating areas for wildlife? Do you want to do your part to keep Pierce County wild? Now is your chance to become a Habitat Steward™! National Wildlife Federation and Tahoma Audubon Society are offering a specialized 24-hour training program to teach you how to help others create and restore wildlife habitat in backyards, schoolyards, and other community areas. Classes will be held on Wednesday evenings in October (10/18, 10/25) and November (11/8), with the exception of 1 class on Thursday, 11/2. These will take place at Adriana Hess Audubon Center (2917 Morrison Rd. W, University Place, WA, 98466). The training also includes 2 Saturday field trips on October 28th and November 4th. These field trips will be visits to natural areas in Pierce County, where we will learn about wildlife, habitat restoration and also participate in a volunteer stewardship event for Green Puyallup Day!

This training is engaging, fun and highly informative and you get to meet and interact with local conservation professionals and other similarly interested folks! Topics from speakers may include: rain gardens, native plants, habitat restoration, pollinators and birds, mushrooms and fungi, and much more!

 Cost of the training is $30 to cover classroom materials. Note: scholarships are available! No one will be turned down due to lack of funds. Three times per month, as scheduled between our mentors and their students, we come together to build bonds that last a lifetime. The first two meetings each month are designed for our mentors and our young adults to meet one-on-one to develop trust and kinship, and to discuss topics pertinent to students in today’s world. The third meeting brings us all together to convene on what we have learned.

At our monthly workshops the students learn skills that will help them navigate different hardships that are typical during middle school. Some of these topics include, cyber bullying, social media safety, healthy living, and how to avoid drugs and dating violence.

When you and your student meet for your one-on-one time, you are have fun, laugh together, learn together, and get to know each other. As a mentor, you are there as an older, wiser friend, to help guide your student through difficult times, like learning to take responsibility for mistakes, and through incredible times, like watching your friend pass a difficult test, make a sports team or club, or volunteer at local events. Through your actions, you will help your mentee learn how to navigate through the confusions of adolescence by talking through all options and paving a pathway for success and happiness.

Our mentors meet students wherever they may be in life. Each mentor and student relationship is a little different – some matches are going to be more academically driven, while others are going to be more focused on talking about life.

Global Acts of Compassion (GAC) is searching for a new Board of Directors as we grow and transition our founders into other staff roles. Volunteering on a nonprofit's Board is a great way to add to your nonprofit resume, learn about the industry, and REALLY make an impact in the world by serving as an integral part of an organization. Our movement addresses income inequality, providing aid for the homeless, environmental consciousness, and educating communities on the necessity of practicing compassion regularly with one another and the eco-system.

It is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience rearing Pacific salmon from egg to fry stage, then releasing them into a nearby water way. The Arthur Foss and Lightship No. 83 are registered as National Historic Landmarks. All of our ships provide hands-on platforms for educational programs, public tours, and annual festivals that celebrate workboat culture, boats, music and stories.

Our educational programs range from tugboat storytime for preschoolers to work exchange and boatwright in residence programs for young adults starting their maritime career. We also host the annual Classic Workboat every fall as well as a variety of other public programs throughout the year.

Most of our fundraisers are held onboard our historic ships. They include a St. Patrick’s Day party, Tugboat Happy Hours every Tuesday from mid-July through August, and a fireworks party on the 4th of July. These events, earned income from vessel rentals, and general donations support our operations and educational programs. Most off our restoration efforts are funded through competitive grants.

Evergreen Treatment Services is a private nonprofit that has been in operation since 1973. We provide medication assisted treatment to 2800+ adults with opiate use disorders in several locations across western Washington. Northwest Danish Association is a small non-profit organization that does cultural programs and social services in the community. We would love to have some help from experienced fundraisers who can help us find new funds through for example new donors, grants, events, or other means. We are working to expand as an organization and attract more members and need additional funds to do so.

This level is for the person who has a busy schedule but wants to help when they get a free minute. You will be trained on how to process materials in various areas and use the volunteer to-do binder to complete tasks (organized by the amount of time they take) when you stop in. Projects might include materials processing (sorting/pricing donations, helping customers) or outreach class prep (poking holes in caps, cutting paper to size, unpacking/sorting used outreach go-packs. This is perfect for volunteers with 2-10 hours available per month.

Can you write grants? Can you help us obtain the funds to support our needed programs? For over 30 years the Alternative Humane Society has survived based on our fund-raising, adoptions, and donations. We have two great needs that we cannot manage to underwrite on our own: preventing unwanted dog and cat births through spay/neuter assistance and vet bills for the dogs that come to us with severe health issues. We have already saved thousands of animals, educated and supported the community, but it is not enough. With proper funding, we can help to break the cycle of unwanted pet births. We know the funding is there, we need someone with the skills to help us obtain it.

Communities In Schools of Federal Way mentoring program recruits volunteer mentors from our community and matches them with a student who could benefit from having a consistent, caring adult role-model in their life.  Mentors support young people through their formative years and provide guidance and encouragement through life’s challenges.  Mentor relationships provide stability when a student’s home or school life may be in turmoil, and are key to helping young people stay engaged in school.

Please come and volunteer as an after school tutor at Ballinger Homes in Shoreline. As a volunteer, you will be helping set up, prepare snack, helping with homework for children from K-12, reading to children, listening to children read, and being a main part in their enrichment and social development. This program takes place Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays afternoons. We are flexible and will work with your schedule! West Seattle Helpline is seeking volunteers to assist on our Helpline Hotline and reach out to previous clients, retrieving thoughts/opinions that will better shape our future programs.

As an evaluation volunteer, you will be responsible for helping us receive, process, and evaluate data from our semi-annual client feedback surveys. This will involve speaking to previous clients on the phone about the services they received to collect required information and contacting other staff members as necessary.

Volunteering a couple hours every month will allow WSH to improve our programs and better serve our West Seattle neighbors, and it will also give volunteers a chance to provide additional support to clients who may be seeking other services. Shifts will range from 1-2 hours, and scheduling can be very flexible!

 Katharine’s Place is a home to 25 families in Seattle’s north Rainier Valley. Our program provides housing to families coming from homelessness, those affected by HIV/AIDS, clients with disabilities, and refugees and immigrants. We work with our tenants to promote stability and self-sufficiency. One aspect of our work is to provide fun activities for our families to participate in. Some of the families have asked that we try and find someone who can come to the building to help the kids with homework since most of the family's are English as a second language.

There are elderly in the community lacking the stable foundation and support system needed for sustainment. Our program is unique in that all services provided are free, with no membership fees or obligations.

By joining our core of Volunteer Drivers, you can pick rides that work with your schedule. VS offers mileage reimbursement, volunteer’s insurance (available for accidents and liability incidents), social gatherings with peers, and great support from program staff.

A Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) is a volunteer appointed by the Court to advocate for the best interest of a child who is alleged to have been abused or neglected. In order to do this, the CASA/GAL must investigate the facts of the case, recommend a course of action to the Court, explain the Court's findings to the child, facilitate the resolution of the presenting problems, and monitor progress.

Volunteer in our detention center to work directly with our staff to house juvenile offenders in a safe, secure, and humane living environment where they are cared for and supervised by professional, well-trained staff. We believe that detention, while providing community protection, can also provide residents with an opportunity for constructive and positive change.

Assist a Probation Officer in monitoring juvenile offenders and verifying compliance with court orders. RESPONSIBILITIES: Work directly with the assigned Probation Officer. Provide good, positive role modeling, while maintaining a professional demeanor. Maintain contact with youth, parents, outside agencies and schools, via telephone or in person, and report back to the Probation Office.

Participate as a member of a three-person Board which meets with juvenile offenders and their guardians to explain and offer Diversion as an alternative to Court proceedings. In those cases where families desire Diversion, the referring offense and circumstances surrounding it will be discussed. The Community Board (CAB) will then determine consequences designed to hold the youth accountable.

Assist Guardian Ad Litems in advocacy of children that are involved with the Juvenile Court due to abuse or neglect.  Monitor court orders, visit children to ensure safe and stable home, prepare court reports, attend shared decision making meetings.  Learn about the court system, foster care system and the department of social and health services.  Great volunteer opportunity for people interested in social work, social justice, and advocacy.
