Volunteer: Refugee Youth Tutor

Scope of Volunteer Work: Volunteer as a Youth Academic Tutor to help newcomer students build academic skills and confidence! The IRC’s Youth Program provides tutoring, mentoring, and parent support programming for students and their families.  With guidance from IRC staff, volunteers work one-on-one with students to practice English language skills, assist with homework, and facilitate educational games and activities. Volunteer: Dog huggers at dog rescue, with appointment in advance please

We have volunteers who come to the Wiener Ranch and hug dogs.  This is the easiest gig ever if you like dogs.

The time is at 10 am daily with an appointment in advance so no one gets chomped.  Send an email to schedule.  We are open with appointments on weekdays as well as weekends. 


Having folks come to the farm and hug dogs helps us get them socialized before they are placed in their new homes.  Most come inside and sit and we turn loose the hounds.  If you can't stay seated when asked or are terrified of a group of wiener dogs then this is not the volunteer job for you.

We are located on a farm northwest of Spokane and out of town.  There is no bus line to this area so you will need a car and drive yourself to visit us.

I am open for visitors at 10 am daily ONLY with an appointment in advance.  We need to have large watch dogs locked up so no one is injured.  If roads are too icy or dangerous we are also closed then as well.

Please wear long pants and closed toe shoes as dog toe nails can scratch when jumping on laps.

I am not sitting by email or phone so I need to plan my days in advance when taking dogs back and forth to the vet, etc. so please email me to make an appointment in advance.

We also need to build a dog house for a latest guard dog to keep away coyotes at the farm.

We are located northwest of Spokane near Seven Mile and not on the bus line.

We supply the supplies and have the wood all purchased and just need a bit of expert help when we can supply the labor needed too.

We educate the public on responsible pet ownership as well as attend area pet events when we place around 150 dogs a year.  In covid 202 we still placed 96 homeless dogs and a few horses.

STAR creates a safe, consistent learning space with Lead Teachers and volunteers who cultivate trust, get to know participants' passions and interests, foster collaborative friendships, set the culture, and provide social-emotional learning tools that strengthen wellbeing beyond the classroom. STAR features professional Teaching Artists, designers, and innovators who guide students through projects that strengthen artistic skills, foster problem-solving, and introduce new mediums for creative expression.

STAR students love their volunteers. If you enjoy spending time with 3rd-5th graders, they want to meet you! Mentors receive training from Spark Central to help encourage and develop STAR students’ creativity and build positive, playful relationships with them. Expertise in visual arts, performing arts, entrepreneurship, and other subjects explored in the program are not required - all you need is a desire to share yourself with these cool kids!


A year of STAR is organized into three units that engage students in investigative performance arts, technology and entrepreneurship, and large-scale visual art projects. In each project, Lead Teachers, Teaching Artists, and volunteer mentors guide and support students in identifying playful, impassioned ideas and developing them into powerful, tangible expressions of student voice.

Fall projectAtmosphere. Atmosphere gives artists the ability to tell stories with their breath. During this module, artists will create art with their breath and bodies as they dance, act, sing, and play.

Winter projectSatellite. It takes a lot of creatives, scientists, and innovators to create a satellite. For Satellite, artists will use technology to create art through animation, photography, film, science and entrepreneurship.

Spring projectConstellation. All the connections that make artists stronger. During Constellation, artists will gravitate toward tactile art that builds bridges between the previous units. The understanding of motion makes our paintings stronger. Thinking in 3D makes us better sculptors. Artists can expect to make art bigger and better than ever, on and off the canvas.


Time commitment: Mentors are expected at one school (either Garfield or Holmes) from 2:45-5:15 PM for at least one day each week. This program runs Tue-Fri from October to June. We are hoping to find volunteers who are available for the entire school year, but if you are only available for one unit, that is alright, too.


For the month of January, STAR will be limited to twice a week at each school. Holmes will be run on Wednesdays and Fridays and Garfield will be run on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Clothes For Kids provides free school wardrobes to students across Snohomish County and the Northshore School District. Our vision is to empower students for school success one wardrobe at a time. We are currently seeking volunteers to staff our retail store environment where kids and teens can pick out their own clothes with their families. Volunteers help in a wide array of areas including: sorting clothing donations, inventory, tagging, stocking the shop, assisting customers with shopping, and running our on-site thrift store.

BIDEWW AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM SUMMARY

After several parents engaged us to create a program that will support West African kids with their academic, life and social skills needs, in February of 2022, WAWAC finally created what we call our "BIDEWW" (STAR) After School Program. WAWAC's BIDEWW/star after-school program and homework club seeks to create a culturally appropriate fun and new learning environment that fosters social skills, and provides learning opportunities for our kids through exciting semi-structured activities such as science experiments, cooking classes, arts projects, singing, dancing, music, cinematography, storytelling and more at a culturally appropriate setting for free of charge.

Since the kids spend a lot of time at school where they learn in a structured and formal environment, the BIDEWW After School program is done in a free environment where they still learn fun stuff that they create themselves. Additional recreational activities are also held to encourage them to stay active, healthy, and connected with one another.

This is also a platform for West African kids to interact, learn from each other and build their own community. It is available to school-aged children 5 to 17 years old in Snohomish and King Counties twice a week. Through this platform, the kids of our community explore their artistic instincts through collaborative art projects. It holds significant value for our kids because it inspires them to be creatively driven at an early age. An opportunity that they don't ordinarily receive from their parents, as many West African parents deem art a "waste of time," grossly depriving kids of the possibility to explore their creativity. We pride ourselves on opening our program to a wide range of African kids tailored to their unique needs, identity, and values.

After successfully implementing the pilot Bideww After School program in Snohomish County in September 2022, WAWAC partnered with School’s Out Washington to start a similar program in King County.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The WAWAC Bideww After School Program Assistant assists the Program Director (PD) in implementing programs outside of school hours for West African children in Washington. His/her role includes:
Assisting PD with Planning, preparing, and implementing an approved curriculum that includes language studies, math, art, social/life skills, and African culture and realities.
Aiding PD with snack time/bathroom
Assisting PD to keep students' mannerisms on point.
Assisting PD with keeping track of newly enrolled students.
Oblige PD with keeping track of all necessary documents relating to the program such as incident reports, compliance forms, transportation request forms, etc.
Implementing daily lesson plans and activities that focus on developing children’s social, life and motor skills.
Study each weekly curriculum given by PD for preparedness.
Follow PD’s schedule provided and any direction given.
Coordinating with PD and assisting with UW student volunteers.
Attending meetings and capacity building training organized by WAWAC funding partners and submitting reports to PD as needed in a timely manner.
Assisting children with assignments and homework, such as reading, writing, and math.

Interacting with the children to provide guidance, emotional support, and motivation to complete tasks.

Do you and your friends love to cook? Consider recruiting a small group of friends to come cook and serve meals at Nativity House Shelter.

Scheduling is flexible. We realize that volunteers have busy lives and we'll work with you to design a plan that fits busy schedules.

Nativity House Shelter is 167-bed shelter serving adult men and women who are actively experiencing homelessness in Tacoma. The Nativity House Kitchen serves 3-meals a day and needs volunteers who know how to cook for a crowd.

Groups often plan meals like pancakes, casseroles, bulgogi/teriyaki, spaghetti & meatballs, hotdogs and sloppy joes.

Groups are encouraged to use ingredients available in the kitchen to build a menu and/or donate their own ingredients based on whatever they want to cook.

If groups are more comfortable serving instead of cooking, just let us know. We always need servers on the cafeteria line. 

The Nativity House Kitchen provides breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week, 365 days per year so there is always an opportunity to serve.

Come Cook with Friends!

Do you and your friends love to cook? Consider recruiting a small group of friends to come cook and serve meals at Nativity House Shelter.

Scheduling is flexible. We realize that volunteers have busy lives and we'll work with you to design a plan that fits busy schedules.

Nativity House Shelter is 167-bed shelter serving adult men and women who are actively experiencing homelessness in Tacoma. The Nativity House Kitchen serves 3-meals a day and needs volunteers who know how to cook for a crowd.

Groups often plan meals like pancakes, casseroles, bulgogi/teriyaki, spaghetti & meatballs, hotdogs and sloppy joes.

Groups are encouraged to use ingredients available in the kitchen to build a menu and/or donate their own ingredients based on whatever they want to cook.

If groups are more comfortable serving instead of cooking, just let us know. We always need servers on the cafeteria line. 

The Nativity House Kitchen provides breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week, 365 days per year so there is always an opportunity to serve.

We have an ongoing need for everyday people to volunteer as Guardians ad Litem (GAL) to represent to the court the best interest of our children in care. There are over 200 children in Skagit county who are abandoned or victims of abuse or neglect. We need people in our community to be a voice for these children. Our next training is coming up and we would love to tell you more about how you can advocate for an abused or neglected child.

VGALs are community volunteers who are appointed by judges to advocate in court for abused and/or neglected children. When a child is in danger living at home, the Department of Children, Youth and Family (DCYF) may step in and say that the child needs to be moved to a safe environment. In order to determine what circumstances will keep the child safe, the case is brought to court where a judge will rule where the child should go.

Once a case is brought to court, the judge appoints a GAL volunteer to the child. The GAL volunteer researches the child's situation - this includes talking to the child as well as the child's parents, teachers, counselors... anyone who plays a significant role in the child's life - and then forms an educated recommendation as to what is in that child's best interests to maintain well-being and encourage safe permanency. Once the GAL volunteer determines the child's best interests, they write a report to the judge recommending a home placement (returning to their previous homes, foster care, staying with relatives...) and services to address any unique, unmet needs that the child has.

GAL volunteers spend an average of ten hours a month working on a case, though typically they spend more time at the beginning of a case than they do towards the end. Cases generally last at least a year, and we ask that each volunteer commits to remaining a volunteer as long as their case is open. Children face a constant rotation of judges, social workers, and foster homes, but all the while their GAL volunteer remains a stable and constant adult in their lives. Training is 30 hours over the course of 4 weeks.

General Expectations (all volunteers)

As a Company Advisor (CA), you will be the team’s guide. This unique opportunity to educate and empower students also develops your leadership skills firsthand. Share your expertise in your team’s “workplace”, engage them in critical thinking exercises, and provide feedback on mission and vision.

Behind the scenes, you and other volunteer professionals from around the world will network, gain practical management insights from our program staff, and learn from each others’ experiences to inspire your team to victory.

Company Advisors often call WBW one of their favorite weeks of the year, as the week brings them deep fulfillment while also helping them grow as people and as leaders. You’ll be surprised by the lifelong connections you make with students and deep friendships and community you forge with other CAs.

Face coverings are required at all times in repack room. Closed-toe shoes are required. Volunteers in flip-flops or sandals will be unable to repack.  If open food is being repacked, hair nets will be required – you are welcome to bring a hat to wear instead.

Our hospice program needs veteran volunteers who are willing to share some of their time and talents to help patients and their families who are dealing with end-of-life issues.
