Volunteer: Clarke Beach Party Clean-Up!

Help us remove weeds and spread mulch in Clarke Beach Park. Weeds make it harder for native plants to grow by overcrowding them and out competing them for resources. We want to protect the native plants that are in the park! Once we remove the weeds, we’ll spread a layer of mulch to cover the bare ground. Mulch is an incredible resource for degraded environments. It helps with weed suppression, water retention, and to create healthier soil.

All ages welcome, no experience required. Gloves, tools, and small snacks provided.

Please note: we require participants aged 14 and under to volunteer with a parent or guardian at a ratio of 1 adult to 3 kids.

Volunteer: Food Bank Distribution

This is an all weather outdoor position working with the public that requires bending lifting and standing. At your designated “station”  you will help distribute food items based on the guidelines for an average household of 4/5 people unless otherwise specified.  Restock the shopping line from the back-up supplies set up for you.  Addressing any dietary restrictions or special requests via  assistance from the runner on shift or the Assistant Food Bank Manager.

Please try to arrive about 15 minutes early for your first shift to fill out a volunteer application and waiver along with getting a brief orientation.

Try to park away from the building during service times Wednesdays 3-6pm and Thursdays 10am to 12:30 to make it easier for clients to load their food, clothing or laundry.

*To enter, use the double green doors at the food bank if no one hears you knock loudly at the front door.

Our food bank service is held outdoors, and our other departments often have doors open or are involved in going outside periodically so please dress to be warm enough, layers are a good idea. More is better than less, we have lockers if you need one.

If you anticipate having difficulty meeting this obligation in any way, please let me know as soon as possible either by email, phone or text at 509-879-6309, please include your name and the shift you signed up for so I can find a replacement for the schedule. Thank you, Nina, Volunteer Manager

Volunteer: Child advocates needed! No legal background necessary!

Child Advocates needed! We are looking for a select group of people with extraordinary hearts to volunteer as Guardians ad Litem to represent to the best interest of children in the foster care system. There is an exceptional need for Native American and Hispanic volunteers.

Email Galstacyz@gmail.com, visit http://www.pnwgal.com/vgal-program or call 360-393-6666 for more information. If you would like to see an idea of the full agenda visit https://wachildadvocates.org/nextcoretraining/

or visit us on Facbook for the most recent information https://www.facebook.com/PNWGAL/

We are planning our next in person training group and would love to hear from you!

We have an ongoing need for everyday people to volunteer as Guardians ad Litem (GAL) to represent to the court the best interest of our children in care. There are over 200 children in Skagit county who are abandoned or victims of abuse or neglect. We need people in our community to be a voice for these children. Our next training is coming up and we would love to tell you more about how you can advocate for an abused or neglected child.

VGALs are community volunteers who are appointed by judges to advocate in court for abused and/or neglected children. When a child is in danger living at home, the Department of Children, Youth and Family (DCYF) may step in and say that the child needs to be moved to a safe environment. In order to determine what circumstances will keep the child safe, the case is brought to court where a judge will rule where the child should go.

Once a case is brought to court, the judge appoints a GAL volunteer to the child. The GAL volunteer researches the child's situation - this includes talking to the child as well as the child's parents, teachers, counselors... anyone who plays a significant role in the child's life - and then forms an educated recommendation as to what is in that child's best interests to maintain well-being and encourage safe permanency. Once the GAL volunteer determines the child's best interests, they write a report to the judge recommending a home placement (returning to their previous homes, foster care, staying with relatives...) and services to address any unique, unmet needs that the child has.

GAL volunteers spend an average of ten hours a month working on a case, though typically they spend more time at the beginning of a case than they do towards the end. Cases generally last at least a year, and we ask that each volunteer commits to remaining a volunteer as long as their case is open. Children face a constant rotation of judges, social workers, and foster homes, but all the while their GAL volunteer remains a stable and constant adult in their lives. Training is 30 hours over the course of 4 weeks.

Volunteer: Become a Mentor with the U-District Mentoring Program!

At U-District Mentoring, we believe that everyone has something to offer as a mentor. It doesn’t take much to greatly impact a child's life. By showing up consistently, for four hours each month, you can help to decrease depression symptoms, increase self confidence, and encourage higher educational goals for your mentee. Forming these relationships and expanding a child’s horizons can be one of the most rewarding experiences.

Unlike other mentoring programs, we don’t have a waitlist of children. Instead, we intentionally match the mentor and the child based on interests and experiences. Hoping to be matched with a child that likes to paint or play sports? With the help of school counselors, we work to find that perfect match.

The commitment level is easy, even for the busiest of people. You can create the schedule and get to plan each outing!

Volunteer: Volunteer Opportunity helping Older Adults

Bellingham At Home (BAH), a non-profit membership organization, is a virtual Village in Bellingham WA empowering older adults to stay active and engaged while living in their own homes and neighborhoods.  It is a program of the Whatcom Council on Aging.

The Village is powered by volunteers who provide “good neighbor” assistance to older folks in our community. Volunteers provide transportation to medical appointments and other services in Bellingham, take members shopping, provide companionship, complete light home repairs and garden maintenance, and other tasks as needed.  (BAH does NOT provide medical assistance, personal care, nor ongoing cleaning and maintenance tasks.)

If you are searching for opportunities to use your skills to support the Bellingham community and enjoy talking with interesting people who have many life experiences to share, you’d make a great BAH volunteer. Most assistance requests are for 2-hour time slots and you can let us know when you are available.  There is no weekly commitment; flexibility to meet your own schedule. BAH members reward our volunteers with their most grateful appreciation!

Volunteer: PPGWNI Health Center Greeter

The health center greeting team with Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho ensures patients are welcomed as they enter our facilities. Vetting and training processes include, but are not limited to, non-engagement tactics, how to approach patients, self- and fellow care, and more. You must be able to withstand the elements outside of clinic - heat, cold, verbal harassment, while maintaining a positive, patient-focused demeanor. Greeters deter patients from paying attention to or engaging with anti-Planned Parenthood protesters that frequent our health centers. Most importantly, this team does not engage with anti-choice protesters, always exercising our non-engagement policies.

3 simple steps to becoming a volunteer

Meet virtually with the Volunteer Program Manager for a brief chat about volunteer optionsComplete volunteer paperwork and background checkAttend a volunteer orientation session

The greeting team is looking for dedicated volunteers who:

Remain outside of the assigned health center during service hours.  Welcome and reassure patients as they enter and exit our health centers.  Always adhere to PPGWNI’s non-engagement guidelines.  Report any suspicious behavior directly to the supervisor.

Location and Time Commitment: This position is required to serve at either Bellingham Health Center or our Mount Vernon Health Center. Shifts will be no more than 2 hours and are scheduled for anticipated peak activity times. Volunteers are expected to commit to a regular weekly shift for periods of about 2/3 months. Those who can provide on-call service as protests arise are highly encouraged to pursue this position.

If this opportunity interests you please respond to this email or reach out to volunteer@ppgwni.org to get started today!
