Recreational opportunities include mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, boating and more! Project Description: From Wilber Trailhead, we will walk down the Centennial trail about ½ mile to the CCC camp area. There are several overstocked stands of Ponderosa Pine trees in the area that could use some thinning. By removing the weaker trees and leaving the appropriate amount of space for the healthier trees, we can improve the health of the stand as well as reduce wildfire severity risks. We will start out by using handsaws and loppers to remove smaller trees. For the second half of the event, we can fire up the woodchipper and broadcast the mulch within the newly thinned stand of trees. Hiking Information: ½ mile on flat, paved trail. After our safety briefing at the trailhead, we will hike down the Centennial Trail to the CCC camp. Planning Information: No experience is necessary; we will provide the training and tools you need. Expect to be physically active at your own pace for up to 4 hours on uneven terrain. No problem if you need to leave early, but please be on time to sign in and attend safety briefing! Recommended for ages 10 and older; under 14 must be accompanied by an adult and a parental consent form must be signed for anyone under 18. Volunteer: Refugee Community Garden Individual VolunteeringVolunteer at Paradise Parking Plots Community Garden and support our refugee neighbors! Our 2-acre community garden provides space for refugee, immigrant and Kent resident gardeners to grow cultural foods and reconnect with the soil. We need you! Consistent, returning volunteers are essential to the health of our garden. And best of all, no prior skills are required! We will train and develop you over time so you can work on increasingly more complex tasks like weeding our food forest, controlling pests and diseases, assisting with minor construction projects, managing our mason bees, or whatever else catches your interest and will enhance our community space. Volunteer: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Community Work Party at Squalicum Creek ParkCelebrate the collective power of community by joining the City of Bellingham and the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) as well as other community partners for our annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service Community Work Party on Saturday, January 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Willow Spring in Squalicum Creek Park. Together, we'll plant native trees and shrubs to restore fish and wildlife habitat and improve water quality to benefit salmon and other native species. Through this work, we'll be advancing the environmental justice movement, which was inspired by Dr. King through his concern for the urban environment. Environmental justice embodies the principle that all people have the right to clean air, water, and soil, as well as the right to live in safe and healthy communities. This event is partnering with Birchwood Food Desert Fighters (BFDF) to collect unopened donations for their efforts in promoting equitable food access to the community. BFDF supports our community through weekly events, food share boxes, food delivery, farming, advocacy, and more. Volunteers are encouraged to bring donations to this work party to support BFDF's work. You need: Weather-appropriate clothing, long pants, closed-toe shoes, snacks, and a full water bottle. We provide: Tools, gloves, instruction, and light refreshments, including free Tony’s coffee and free pizza, all of which were generously donated for this event. We're also giving away free trees while supplies last! Volunteers should be aware that the work party site includes typical park uneven terrain. Volunteers assume all liability for conducting volunteer work within the project area. Additional information will be emailed to registered participants the evening before the work party. Volunteer: Become a Mentor with the U-District Mentoring Program! At U-District Mentoring, we believe that everyone has something to offer as a mentor. It doesn’t take much to greatly impact a child's life. By showing up consistently, for four hours each month, you can help to decrease depression symptoms, increase self confidence, and encourage higher educational goals for your mentee. Forming these relationships and expanding a child’s horizons can be one of the most rewarding experiences. Unlike other mentoring programs, we don’t have a waitlist of children. Instead, we intentionally match the mentor and the child based on interests and experiences. Hoping to be matched with a child that likes to paint or play sports? With the help of school counselors, we work to find that perfect match. The commitment level is easy, even for the busiest of people. You can create the schedule and get to plan each outing! Ready to make an impact on a child's life and your community? Just click the blue tab that says: Respond to Need to learn more. Or email Lexi at lexi@udptfoundation.com or text or call at 971.322.4684. Volunteer: 2026 MLK Day at Pine Lake ParkMonday, January 19th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service - a National Day of Service that takes place on the third Monday of January each year. The day honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and encourages Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. While Dr. Martin Luther King Jr did not directly advocate for conservation of natural areas, he fought against environmental injustices including fighting for equal access to parks and green spaces during the height of segregation and cleaner working conditions for sanitation workers. Today many environmental advocates count him among the people responsible for today’s thriving environmental justice movement. His words continue to inspire movements seeking equal access to clean water, safe parks, and more for many different communities. Learn More The City of Sammamish invites you to join us at Pine Lake Park to remove and mulch over noxious weeds while celebrating the privilege of having access to a vibrant parks system. Who can volunteer: This project is perfect for individuals, or families (8+) and groups/organizations looking for service projects/hours and students looking to complete community service hours for school. What we provide: Water, snacks, gloves and tools will be provided. Please dress appropriately for outdoor work in cold weather including dressing in layers, wear long sleeves/pants and closed-toed shoes. Volunteer: Disasters Harm Families. Can you Help?Every day, the American Red Cross sees the heartbreak of people trying to cope with more intense storms, heavier rainfall, higher temperatures, stronger hurricanes and more devastating wildfires. As more people rely on the Red Cross for help, the need for compassionate volunteers has never been greater. Volunteers help comfort and support people who are forced from their homes due to fires, storms and other emergencies, so they don’t have to face tough times alone. Join us and turn your compassion into action by becoming a volunteer today. We are actively recruiting for these critical volunteer roles: Shelter Support Team: During large disasters, you can support the day-to-day activities within a shelter which may include working in reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Free online training will be provided. If the need arises, volunteers are asked to commit to multiple local shifts of 4-12 hours each. For those able to travel outside of their local area, a commitment of at least 14 consecutive days, working 8- or 12-hour shifts is required. Disaster Health Services Team: During large disasters, you can use your professional skills as a licensed healthcare provider to deliver hands on care and education to shelter residents. Qualified licenses include RN, LPN, LVN, EMT, Paramedic, MD, DO, PA, NP, APRN. Only RNs have full scope of practice. Disaster Action Team: While big hurricanes and wildfires get the most news coverage, smaller disasters are no less devastating to the families affected. Most of the 60,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are smaller disasters like home fires. As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can help comfort and support people in your community by meeting any immediate needs such as food, shelter, clothing or supplies and connecting them to long term recovery services. We supply all the training you need.
