Volunteer: Help Students Succeed in English for Work ClassesHopelink is looking for volunteer career advisers for the English for Work program! Fall quarter is already underway, so we are looking for advisers for our winter and spring quarters. The next New Adviser Onboarding meetings will be held in January and April 2026. About English for Work and the Adviser Role English for Work is a quarter-long English language program, designed for immigrants and refugees who are planning to get a job (or a better job) or enroll in college/job training in the next six months or so. In the class, students improve English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while learning about U.S. work culture, career goal setting, resume writing, and interview preparation. Each adviser is assigned 2-3 students for the quarter. Advisers work one-on-one with their assigned students, supporting them in setting short-term and long-term career goals, resume writing, English practice, applying for jobs, and preparing for job interviews. Advisers primarily meet with students virtually, with occasional in-person opportunities at local libraries or other local public meeting spaces if student transportation allows. This is a great role for working folks because the meeting schedules can be flexible. It’s also great for recently retired folks who are looking for ways to give back to the community and share their industry expertise! We provide training and support to volunteers throughout the quarter. Adviser Requirements: Must be enthusiastic about connecting with students virtually and comfortable using technology (Zoom is the most common mode for advising meetings, accessible to those with busy schedules and transportation barriers). Have at least 3 years of U.S. work experience with some knowledge about the job market and the job search process. Excellent interpersonal skills with strong ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and respectfully with immigrants and refugees who are developing their English language skills. Commitment to anti-racism, being equitable and inclusive to all, and to practicing cultural humility. Available to meet with their advisees at least 3-6 times during the quarter. Able to commit to advising for at least two quarters (about six months).Agency: Hopelink Hopelink is looking for volunteer career advisers for the English for Work program! Volunteer: Staff the Capitol Hill Tool LibraryJoin our crew to learn new skills, connect with your community, and have lots of fun. No prior experience required! How we serve the community The Capitol Hill Tool Library empowers our neighborhood to build DIY skills and improve sustainability, through offering tool borrowing, workspace, and classes. Our inventory includes over 3,000 items, ranging from ice cream makers to hedge trimmers to sewing machines to drills. Our workshop has spaces for woodworking, jewelry making, and 3D printing. And our classes cover everything from backpacking to kombucha brewing wood shop safety to tax prep. We're an entirely volunteer staff, and everything we offer is free or pay-what-you-can so that we can serve everyone in the community. What skills you’ll need Absolutely none. Really! Many of us (including the person writing this listing!) came to the tool library with no DIY, woodworking, or "maker" experience at all - just an interest in connecting with our neighborhood. It’s very easy to learn on the job. What you’ll do We're open six days per week, for three hours each day. You'll pick a day to come in for, where you and one or two other tool librarians will serve patrons and improve the library. This includes checking tools in and out (like a library book), organizing inventory, helping patrons plan their projects, designing outreach and signage, and repairing broken items. During your first shift, you’ll get an orientation from an existing volunteer and we’ll help you find tasks that you enjoy. Why you’ll be excited Staffing the tool library is a fun, rewarding way to connect with your community. You’ll meet your neighbors and help them with projects that they’re infectiously enthusiastic about. You’ll also learn a ton through your own tasks - whether it’s by cataloging new inventory, chatting with patrons, or opening up and trying to repair items. You’ll do all this while working as a team with other sociable, community-minded tool librarians who are excited to make Capitol Hill a better place. You'll also have a chance to meet tool librarians from other shifts at our monthly volunteer potlucks. Volunteer: Meals on Wheels Drivers NeededCome join our Amazing Meals on Wheels Volunteer Team! Are you a kind and compassionate person who wants to make a difference and have a positive impact for senior members in our community? If the answer is yes, then this is the opportunity for you! We have a team of amazing volunteers who bring meals to homebound seniors in our community Monday thru Friday, delivering over 4000 meals each week. Our Meals on Wheels clients struggle to cook for themselves for a variety of reasons: some lost a loved one who did the cooking, some suffer from physical limitations, some face cognitive decline, others struggle to leave the house to get groceries for cooking. Whatever the reason, we are there to make sure they have healthy meals. We are looking for Sub Drivers to fill in when Regular Drivers are on vacation, have an appointment, or are out sick, with the opportunity for a recurring once-a -week route delivery when one arises, if desired. It does require having your own vehicle for transporting meals, with mileage reimbursement available. If you are interested in becoming a driver, we would love to have you join us at our next Meals on Wheels Orientation, which is mandatory before being able to deliver meals. (Date TBD) Most routes leave our center between 7:45am and 11:00 am Monday-Friday. (No weekend routes) To become a volunteer driver: 1. We ask volunteers to participate in an orientation (approx. 1.5 hours) to learn about being a driver and how to handle various situations. 2. We ask volunteers to fill out a Volunteer Application so that we can run a background check (required by DSHS). Feel free to come by the Bellingham Senior Activity Center and pick up an application, or apply online at: www.whatcomcoa.org (Click on "VOLUNTEER" in the upper right corner of the homepage, and then scroll about halfway down the page to access the beginning of the application) 3) We will verify Driver's License and Auto Insurance and make a copy of both at the Meals on Wheels Orientation. 4) Before delivering a route, we ask drivers to go on a ride-along with one of our experienced drivers so it is a smooth transition for our participants and our drivers. We would be happy to answer any questions you have and would love for you to join this amazing team of volunteers who are making a huge difference in our community. This is a GREAT opportunity for a teen to ride-along with a parent to deliver meals while the parent drives. Questions?
