Volunteer: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Community Work Party at Squalicum Creek ParkCelebrate the collective power of community by joining the City of Bellingham and the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association (NSEA) as well as other community partners for our annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service Community Work Party on Saturday, January 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Willow Spring in Squalicum Creek Park. Together, we'll plant native trees and shrubs to restore fish and wildlife habitat and improve water quality to benefit salmon and other native species. Through this work, we'll be advancing the environmental justice movement, which was inspired by Dr. King through his concern for the urban environment. Environmental justice embodies the principle that all people have the right to clean air, water, and soil, as well as the right to live in safe and healthy communities. This event is partnering with Birchwood Food Desert Fighters (BFDF) to collect unopened donations for their efforts in promoting equitable food access to the community. BFDF supports our community through weekly events, food share boxes, food delivery, farming, advocacy, and more. Volunteers are encouraged to bring donations of shelf-stable proteins (e.g., canned fish/meats, shelf-stable tofu, shelf-stable milks, nuts, canned beans, etc.) to this work party to support BFDF's work. You need: Weather-appropriate clothing, long pants, closed-toe shoes, snacks, and a full water bottle. We provide: Tools, gloves, instruction, and light refreshments, including free Tony’s coffee and free pizza, all of which were generously donated for this event. We're also giving away free trees while supplies last! Volunteers should be aware that the work party site includes typical park uneven terrain. Volunteers assume all liability for conducting volunteer work within the project area. Additional information will be emailed to registered participants the evening before the work party. Register early, space is limited. If you sign up, please show up! All ages, abilities, and experience levels are welcome. This event is Parkscriptions Certified! Important Registration Steps: After you have completed the required waiver (adult or youth), please be sure to then click "Sign Up" to complete your registration for the event! Completing the waiver does not automatically sign you up. If you are bringing any additional volunteers or family members, please sign up as a team or have them join the site, sign the waiver, and then sign up individually. Here are some guides: Responding as a Team | Get Connected Help Center Signing Waivers | Get Connected Help Center If you are bringing any youth under age 18 and have issues with the waiver or don’t want to create a separate account for them, you can also sign a paper youth waiver at check-in on the day of the work party (or you can print one out and bring it with you). Volunteer: Snowboard with Big Bro Joe at BluewoodSkyline Adventures needs snowboard volunteers to come up to the mountain at Bluewood and help kids and teens from the Big Bro Joe Foundation: getting warm outer clothing on, latching boots, and off to their lessons. After the lessons and lunch, we need the volunteers to free-ski or snowboard with the kids until 2:30pm. Then we need extra hands to hang up all of the used gear and getting the kids back to their bus. Afterwards: you can ski all you want until Bluewood closes. Big Bro Joe Foundation is on a mission to shape bright futures by providing young males with positive role models. Find out more about Big Bro Joe: https://bigbrojoe.org NOTE: You don't need to be male to volunteer! Details: arrive at the Skyline lodge at 8:30am. We will give you a free lift ticket. Around 9am the ski bus arrives and we get the kids outfitted in snow gear and help them pick up their rental equipment. Once ready to go, we help the kids get to their lesson that Bluewood provides. For lunch, everyone gets a lunch ticket and goes into the main lodge to grab their meal. After lunch, the kids get to free ski until 2:30pm. We like to make sure there is a volunteer with the kids in case they need help getting up after a fall and to make sure they don't go down any black diamond routes. There will be a seasoned volunteer up on the mountain as well so just bring yourself, your gear, and we will show you the rest. -If you don't have a snowboard let us know and we can arrange those for you at no charge. Volunteer: Volunteer mentor for one of our incredible students in the Bellevue School District!Rainier Athletes' (RA) mission is to affirm our youth’s sense of purpose and belonging by intentionally connecting their core community of teachers, coaches, families, and mentors. RA is a long-term mentoring organization that begins walking alongside students and their families in 4th grade and continues through high school graduation and beyond. Each student is matched with a dedicated mentor who meets with them weekly, fully funded to participate in year round sports and activities, and supported as they explore and advocate for their unique identity. No experience with sports, mentoring, or working with youth is required. Trainings are held throughout the year and you’ll have support from our dedicated team whenever you need it. RA students are not just athletes, but are also artists, activists, engineers, and up-and-coming philosophers. Their passions are a way that we engage in a deeper conversation with them and their supporters. So no, you don’t have to love sports! RA mentors are volunteers with diverse backgrounds, skill sets, and interests. Volunteer mentors meet with their mentee once a week at the mentee’s school. After check-ins, mentors share a report with their mentee’s family, teachers, and coaches. RA mentors are bridge builders, strengthening relationships beyond their one-on-one connection to the student by uniting the student’s entire Core Community of supporters. We call this approach ONE Team Mentoring! Mentors typically spend 1 hour per week between meeting with the student, and communicating with their parents, teachers, etc. We ask mentors to commit for at least one full school year. Check-ins are typically held on Thursdays or Friday afternoons. The level of involvement outside of weekly check-ins is up to you. Volunteer: Marra Farm Giving Garden Work Party (Group)Do you want to end hunger in your community?
Imagine a city where people have equal access to healthy and culturally appropriate food. The Community Food Education (CFE) at Solid Ground fosters community connections through gardening education, sustainable food production, environmental stewardship, and raising awareness about good nutrition and food justice. We also fight hunger by providing low-income individuals with seeds and materials, and supporting backyard gardeners in donating fruits and vegetables grown in King County. If you share our vision, join us at Marra Farm Giving Garden in Seattle's South Park neighborhood! A Giving Garden Work Party offers an idyllic outdoor opportunity to bond with your coworkers. Dig into soil, plant, weed, and harvest much-needed fresh food for our neighbors as you connect with your team. With the rising cost of food, our local communities rely on fresh produce from Marra Farm more than ever. Help us grow healthy and culturally appropriate food for our neighbors in need! Time Commitment Help us kick off the growing season in March and April, or support us during the highest need months of July through September. We’ve already set aside most Tuesdays from 9am to 2pm during the growing season for large-group work parties, preferably with 20 or more volunteers. We encourage you to sign up for a full shift, but we ask for a minimum of three hours. Teams can consist of coworkers, community or church group members, or neighbors. All are welcome! To Apply Please click the Respond button below. We will get back to you within 3-5 business days with next steps. BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color), and people with the lived experience of food insecurity are strongly encouraged to volunteer. Volunteer: Volunteer Opportunity helping Older AdultsBellingham At Home (BAH), a non-profit membership organization, is a virtual Village in Bellingham WA empowering older adults to stay active and engaged while living in their own homes and neighborhoods. It is a program of the Whatcom Council on Aging. The Village is powered by volunteers who provide “good neighbor” assistance to older folks in our community. Volunteers provide transportation to medical appointments and other services in Bellingham, take members shopping, provide companionship, complete light home repairs and garden maintenance, and other tasks as needed. (BAH does NOT provide medical assistance, personal care, nor ongoing cleaning and maintenance tasks.) If you are searching for opportunities to use your skills to support the Bellingham community and enjoy talking with interesting people who have many life experiences to share, you’d make a great BAH volunteer. Most assistance requests are for 2-hour time slots and you can let us know when you are available. There is no weekly commitment; flexibility to meet your own schedule. BAH members reward our volunteers with their most grateful appreciation! Volunteer: Become a Mentor with the U-District Mentoring Program! At U-District Mentoring, we believe that everyone has something to offer as a mentor. It doesn’t take much to greatly impact a child's life. By showing up consistently, for four hours each month, you can help to decrease depression symptoms, increase self confidence, and encourage higher educational goals for your mentee. Forming these relationships and expanding a child’s horizons can be one of the most rewarding experiences. Unlike other mentoring programs, we don’t have a waitlist of children. Instead, we intentionally match the mentor and the child based on interests and experiences. Hoping to be matched with a child that likes to paint or play sports? With the help of school counselors, we work to find that perfect match. The commitment level is easy, even for the busiest of people. You can create the schedule and get to plan each outing!
