BREMERTON--Serve Washington selected Puget Sound Navy Museum volunteer George Holden as a recipient of the 2024 Washington State Volunteer Service Awards for the Peninsula/Coastal Region of Washington.
George Holden received an individual award for his volunteer service with the Puget Sound Navy Museum.
Holden, a US Navy and Vietnam War veteran, has volunteered with the museum for the past 26 years, 13 of which he has served as its board treasurer.
As treasurer, Holden collects and tracks public donations and helps manage grants. In 2023, Holden's service as treasurer helped the museum offer more than 150 educational programs and serve more than 20,855 students and families, according to Alex Hostetter, the museum's visitor services and volunteer coordinator. Holden also assisted with a transportation grant that allowed 1,200 students to participate in field trips to the museum free of charge.
In addition to handling funds, Holden helps stock, inventory and oversee shift scheduling at the museum's gift shop.
Holden says the best part of being a museum volunteer is "seeing the children get access to education. I like to watch them come and take their classes. It's enjoyable to help out. I got a lot out of the Navy and civil service and I like to give back."
