VANCOUVER--Serve Washington has selected Vancouver resident Daniel Sandor as a recipient of a 2024 Washington State Volunteer Service Award for the Southwest Region of Washington.

The Southwest Region includes Cowlitz, Skamania, Clark and Wahkiakum counties. The purpose of these awards is to honor the many acts of kindness that individuals, families, service groups and organizations perform in communities across the state of Washington.

Sandor is being recognized for his volunteerism at the Clark County Food Bank as a Fresh Alliance truck driver and event helper.

The retired telephone repairperson has been volunteering at the food in 2018. He drives tricks to grocery stores three to four times a week to collect items like overstock and food grocery stores can't sell. He delivers it to the food bank and its mobile distribution centers.

He often stays after his routes to wash and sanitize food bins and help with cleanup and other tasks that need to be done.

Besides the food bank, Sandor volunteers at his church and volunteers to set up camp sites for the Cycle Oregon community bike ride in September.

He says t his favorite part of volunteering is that it enriches his social life.

"Serving with the other volunteers, there's a variety of different groups and we all work together," Sandor said. "Volunteers are what make things happen. It's our responsibility as citizens to give back."
