Healthy Living and Eating: bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to King County
by Rachel Friederich, Serve Washington Communications
KENMORE--In King County, a group of dedicated young volunteers is making a profound difference in the lives of those experiencing food insecurity. Healthy Living and Eating, a nonprofit organization founded and run by high school students from Inglemoor High School in the spring of 2024, has committed itself to providing fresh, nutritious food to low-income communities while also educating people about the importance of healthy eating.
The organization's founder, Aryan Velu, was inspired to act after recognizing the stark contrast between his own access to healthy food and the struggles many others face.
"I'm pretty passionate about working out and eating healthy," the high school junior said. "I was looking around and noticed many people didn't have the same resources to eat healthy. There are so many people who can't do that."
Healthy Living and Eating quickly sprang into action, securing fresh produce donations from local businesses, community organizations, and fundraisers. Since its inception, the nonprofit has donated food weekly to Bethel and Phinney Ridge Lutheran churches, as well as several thousand pounds of fruits and vegetables to the Northshore School District's summer eating program. In just the first few months of operation, they donated 4,000 pounds of fresh produce, and by the end of 2024, they had distributed an estimated 16,000 pounds to around 500 families.
More than just food donations
What sets Healthy Living and Eating apart is its holistic approach to combating food insecurity. In addition to delivering fresh produce, the organization educates communities about nutrition, providing flyers and presentations that highlight the benefits of a healthy diet. Many people who have received food donations have reported feeling healthier and more energized thanks to the combination of fresh produce and nutritional education provided by the group.
A vision for the future
For Velu, the work of Healthy Living and Eating aligns with his long-term aspirations. He plans to pursue a career in medicine, and his experience launching the nonprofit has given him firsthand insight into how access to healthy food directly impacts overall health.
"It's just a good way to give back," he says. "I am extremely grateful to have been brought up in such an amazing family to help out with outreach. I always wanted to give back to people who need it most."
